Laid off from non-profit job. Can I transition into Linux sysadmin work?

I'm about to get laid off from my non-profit job within the next month. I was hired as a general office admin person, and ended up doing mainly Linux sysadmin work. What are my chances of getting this type of work as my next job? Details and snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Where to send my resume at this point in my education?

I'm in community college for I.T. (associate's degree focused on network/sysadmin work, mostly). I have a valuable, but incomplete set of marketable skills at the moment. I have a good handle on how to market myself, but no clue as to who I should be directing my attention to job-search wise . [UbuntuFilter] Hate Computers, Love Computer Science

I have recently become the defacto sysadmin for a number of Ubuntu machines, and it has become painfully obvious that I don't really know what I'm doing. Can you recommend resources for me to better understand how Linux works? Please note that I am not at all interested in this for its own sake, but only because I need to know this to be able to do the fun parts of my job. [more inside]

How can I get decent healthcare w/o insurance and somewhat limited funds?

My husband used to love his IT job. Things changed, now he hates it, because his new work is boring and his new boss is a bully. So he might have found another job... but it has no paid vacation and no health benefits. I am a (secular) homeschooling stay-at-home mom with several chronic health problems. Can I somehow manage to deal with my physical symptoms w/o insurance, because I know it would be mentally better for both of us for him to not work for the bully. [more inside]

If you give me a checklist of signs of serious stress or depression, I can check off pretty much all of them. automatic blacklisting in load balanced environment

How can we automatically block DOS type attacks in a load balanced environment? We used to have mod_evasive on Apache, but now Apache is behind a a load balancer and so does not see the external IPs. We are manually blacklisting IPs in Shorewall - but would like something on the load balancer to do this automatically on detection. Running Linux, Shorewall, Apache and Pound as load balancer.

I've got a web site that shows up just fine for everyone except me. Data Regs Compliance Law Firm to consult?

We want to make sure that we're aware of any data-retention compliance issues that could eventually bite us. I am looking for a law firm we could pay to advise us on this.
