I work an overnight shift and when I don’t have actual work sitting in front of me I’m able to work on my schoolwork and research for a PhD. I’m looking for the easiest way to manage the electronic articles I find (and download) as well as manage the Word documents I’m typing for notes and papers (and the dissertation. Let’s not forget the all-important Dissertation!).

My iPad 2 usually is usually asleep with its Smart Cover closed. Recently, after leaving it asleep for several days, I took it somewhere without network access and used Google Currents, but found all the articles were several days old. I have Settings > Sync > Update set to Automatic, but apparently that doesn't help if I don't have the device on (or maybe if I don't run Currents). Is there a way to get it to wake up every day and update Google Currents without me having to do it manually?

How do I quickly sync all the application data on my iPod touch? Currently, I have to open every single app, wait for it to finish downloading content and then move onto the next app. As I find more and more cool apps, this is taking longer. Is there a way (possibly by hooking it up to my computer) to issue one command and have every application of mine download new data off the web for offline reading?
