What are some other songs like the Nutcracker's 'Pas De Deux'?

My wife and I love The Nutcracker's Pas De Deux (yt), particularly the section that features unison strings playing a descending scale on top of the brass playing slow chord progressions. Can you recommend some other symphonies or works that have this same swelling, somber, almost gut-wrenching feel? [more inside]

How do I learn to hear sonatas and symphonies as unified works?

I enjoy classical music a lot, but at a superficial level (I don't play an instrument). I'm realising that part of my frustration is that I don't hear what makes the various parts of a piece (such as the movements of a sonata or symphony) belong together in a whole. How did you learn to do this? [more inside]

Any recordings of Beethoven Symphony #3 (Eroica) piano four-hands

I'm looking for a recording of the complete Eroica Symphony transcribed for piano four hands (or two pianos) with quality comparable to a compact disc. (To get a taste of what I'm looking for, here's a partial video recording that's quite good.) I'm aware of the two-hand Liszt transcriptions, and can recommend Scherbakov over Katsaris, but two hands are not enough!

What's your preferred collection of Mahler symphonies?

Could anyone recommend a good Mahler cycle? Even better, could anyone post their favourite recordings of each symphony...so far I've been relying on biased friends and dubious Amazon 'Listmania!' collections. Thank you :)
