I need some examples of paintings from the Renaissance with a lot (or some) symbolism. I already have Jan Van Eyck's, The Arnolfini Portrait, can you help me find a couple more?
How do I get a good grounding in the study of literature while not a full-time student? What resources (Great Courses, books, textbooks, seminars, courses, etc.) would help? The purpose is to add depth, symbolism, and allusion to my own writing. [more inside]

I want to get more familiar with the tarot — especially its use as a symbol system and personal religious/artistic/introspective tool, and to some extent also its (actual nonfiction real-world) history. What books or blogs should I read? Study tips for improving facility and speedy recall of card meanings would also be helpful. [more inside]
I'm just curious: where did the neopagan "triple moon" symbol come from? I have yet to find an origin for it after much googling and peering into reference books.

I've noticed some recurrent patterns in music videos (use of numbers, colors, etc.) that have piqued my interest. I'm wondering if any industry insiders can shed any light or if anyone has explored this concept academically or otherwise. [more inside]

This is a slightly strange one, so bear with me if you will! I have been building a rubber-band ball ever since I read the Warren Buffett biography "Snowball". I wanted something in my office that symbolized the snowball idea -- little achievements that gradually grow into something big -- and that I had made myself. It is growing pretty big right now. It occurred to me the other day that a successful strategy requires a dual approach. So now I am thinking that slow and steady is only half the picture. The other half is impulse, intuition, go-with-your-gut and, as my handle indicates, seat-of-my-pants! My question: What can I put in my office that symbolizes this spontaneous trait. The ying to the yang of snowball. The quantum-leap approach, if you will! I want to have something that is either interactive or made by myself so that it is not just an inanimate glump sitting on a shelf. Thank you for indulging me and I look forward to your insights.

I want to do something similar to this London artist's idea...but when I think about it I quickly get mired in the logistics. Can you help me decide if I could do something like this that would be environmentally correct plus not cost me money personally? "Art bin" [more inside]
What's the current state of thought regarding symbolism within psychological analysis (ie Freud and Jung)? I have only a slight knowledge of psychology, but I understand that both Freud and Jung have been widely discredited. Has there been any advances in symbolistic psychology since Freud and Jung's time? Is it still considered a valid tool with which to analyse the human mind and, in a wider context, the workings of the world? [more inside]
A friend of mine has just returned from Mongolia and was describing roving mad-max style gangs of men using Nazi symbols, with apparently limited understanding of their meaning in the west. Where can I read more about Mongolian Nazis? Is this really prevalent? How did they come to hear about Nazis in the first place? Do they get along with western neo-nazis (despite being ethnically Mongolian)? [more inside]

Whenever I dream, stairwells, elevators, and large buildings with multiple levels always figure prominently. There'd be nothing strange about this except a) my daily life does not involve stairwells, large buildings, or elevators in any way, and b) they're in absolutely every dream I have -- no exceptions. This has been going on for at least a year, possibly longer. What could be possibly be causing this?
