A non-touristy single day in Sydney

I'm visiting Sydney this weekend for the Festival of Dangerous Ideas and have all of Friday (and a few hours of Saturday) to kill while my friend is working. I'm from Melbourne and have visited Sydney many times and seen all the Sydney landmarks and touristy spots (The Rocks, Darling Harbour, Sydney Tower, Bridge climb etc) before. [more inside]

Where can I see a great sunset near Sydney, Australia?

In six months I'm travelling to Sydney, Australia to visit a friend and I thought it'd be a great idea to watch the sunset to act as a memory for us both. Where is a good place outside of the city for this?

Are we spending too much on bus fare in Sydney?

Currently my partner commutes to work from Enmore to Lane Cove. It is costing around $12 per day, I've googled around for cheaper ways but come up with nothing - are we missing some way to cut the cost or do we have to suck it up? [more inside]

Where can I hire a formal dress in Sydney, with in-person fitting?

Surprise! I'm going to a black tie event on Saturday night. I have nothing to wear and therefore need to hire a dress. Everything I can find on Google so far is an online order. I would prefer a brick and mortar building where I can try on someone's inventory of dresses; I've done this before in other countries so I know it's A Thing. Where can I do this in Sydney? Recommendations for specific things on an ongoing Australian vacation.

Asking on behalf of (The Rt Hon.) MP, who currently has spotty internet access while he travels around Australia. Where are the best places to 1) see an improv comedy show in Sydney, 2) see a punk/hardcore show in Melbourne, 3) get to relatively quickly from either of those cities to be able to see the outback (as opposed to the bush, which has already been seen on this trip)? Find me places to eat in Sydney

Visiting Sydney at the end of this month. When I'm on vacation it always gets to the end of a long day, I'm tired, hungry, but can never pick a place to eat dinner. Help me plan 8 great locations so that I don't starve! Also, any tips on general Sydney things to do would be appreciated (but mainly asking about dinner locations). Details inside... [more inside]

What should I be looking for in a work relocation package to Australia?

Asking on behalf of a friend: May be transferred from the US to Australia shortly. What should I be looking for in a relocation package? Special snowflake details inside that may affect your answer! I have been transferred around the US a lot and thus know how to assess a relocation package when it's from point A to point B in the US - and, most importantly, I know when it's not enough and I need to hold out for more. I've never been transferred overseas and the only thing I know right now is that a relo package like the ones I get in the States would probably be insufficient. What should I be looking for? Where to stay in Sydney, Australia?

I'm going to Sydney for a weekend and I'm looking for your recommendations of reasonably cheap accommodation - either cheapish hotels or hostels. I'm not looking for anywhere with a party vibe, but I'm open to suggestions apart from that. Ta!

What might I expect to hatch from these?

Sydney reading coffee venue

I've been in Sydney for a while now but still dont have a favorite cafe-hang. Looking for recommendations, preferably but not necessarily in the Surry Hills/Newtown/Inner Westish area, where I could inconspicuously spend the better part of day ploughing through a massive book, with excellent coffee, comfortable seating and minimal distracting muzak.

Where can I sell my watch online and/or in Sydney or Melbourne?

I have inherited a watch that was purchased a few years ago for about $2000. It has rarely been worn and I think it has all of the box/paperwork with it (from what I can see from similar watches online), including the purchase receipt. My question is where/how can I sell it? Either by listing it online, but there seems to be so many websites, or in person via a second hand dealer or similar? I've seen lots of watch websites, but are some better than others? Especially considering I don't have a profile or history on such sites. Thanks

Name that film! Post-apocalyptic 80s Sydney

I am seeking the name of a film, set in post-apocalyptic Sydney (Australia). I could have sworn it had Cassandra Harris in it, but IMDB disagrees. It was filmed and was set in in the early- to mid-80s, and had a bunch of people running around trying to escape the nuclear fallout that hit the Opera House and ended up in the northern beaches. The film wasn't necessarily good, but it resonated. Can you name the film? Thanks!

Sydney or Melbourne as a "Walking City"?

Sydney vs Melbourne as a pedestrian paradise: I am a sociologist doing a study which involves observing pedestrians/window shoppers/etc. I am based in New York City, which is fantastic for my field of work. In Feb/March, I plan to go to Australia for two months, to either Sydney or Melbourne. I have never been to Australia before. QUESTION: Which city has more of a "pedestrian culture"? That is, which is more of a "walking city?" (If you know New York City, my favorite place to observe is Union Square -- I am looking for a comparable location.) Would prefer a place filled with locals, not tourists. Thanks!

What can a neurologist do for my migraines?

I've suffered from migraines all my life, but I've never see a neurologist for them. After a string of particularly disabling attacks, I'm considering asking my GP for a referral. What should I expect from a neurological evaluation? It won't be cheap, so I'd like to know more about what's involved and whether it's worthwhile, in comparison to simply asking my GP to prescribe triptans or other medications I haven't yet tried. (Bonus question: recommend a great neurologist in Sydney, Australia?)
