My partner and I are flying from the US into Melbourne on the first of July and leaving two weeks later. The arrival and departure flights are booked, and now we're looking to lock down our travel schedule within Australia and between Australia and New Zealand. How ambitious is this itinerary? [more inside]
I am preparing for a move to Sydney. I will be burning an askmefi question a week for awhile so here is question one: what to take from my US kitchen? I have a lot of equipment. [more inside]
My in-laws live in Sydney and are looking to move to an area within NSW, Queensland or Victoria which fits their beach-loving, eco-conscious young family. Details within: [more inside]
I am a cyclist in NSW, Australia. At the intersection in this image, I am not sure what I am legally supposed to do (or what my best option is if the legal one is not safe, which I think might be the case). The red line represents off-road cycle paths separate from the pedestrian footpath. I am trying to get from where the first red line (left) ends to where the second one starts (right). Can anyone tell me what I should do? Or who do I contact to find out (or to lobby to improve the intersection for cyclists) - the local council? [more inside]
Moving to Sydney in July. What are the top things I need to do before making the move? [more inside]
My sister is coming to visit in 2 days - yay! We'll be spending 14 days in Sydney and 5 in Melbourne, I think I have most things covered but can you see anything I've missed/have hot tips to make her visit supercool? She hasn't been on holiday for years. [more inside]
I'm reaching out to my fellow Sydney-based Australians for recommendations on Accountants that are geared towards small business/consultancies. I've recently hung up my shingle as a consultant and would like to engage with an accountant that will grow with me and set me off on the right foot. [more inside]
We are house-hunting at the moment in Sydney, Australia. I keep falling in love with federation-style houses. For example, my current obsession is this 101-year-old beauty but I also love this one and a variety of similar places. My husband thinks that houses of this sort of age are likely to be a total money-pit, especially if wooden, and even if renovated. Is this true? [more inside]
We have a couple more days in Sydney, and need a few suggestions for what to do with the rest of our time. I would prefer sights and scenes of nature we can't see anywhere else. The difficulty: my wife needs a break from walking. [more inside]
Next week I am visiting Australia for the first time. Flying in to Sydney, spending a week there with relatives in Merrylands, then two weeks with relatives in Melbourne (Braybrook) and then another week in Sydney. I want to know what is the best way to spend my time given that I am primarily interested in nature and day hikes, so the most pressing question is really 'What are the best day trips and hikes within a two-hour radius of Sydney and Melbourne?' Other factors: [more inside]
I would like to find out which state schools (primary or secondary) parents prefer to avoid in Parramatta and the surrounding region. I have tried to google this and am not having much luck. When I find rankings, they are either limited to e.g. "The top 20 schools in the region!" or they don't seem to be searchable for such a wide region. For example I found one where you can list all school rankings for a postcode, but I've got about 30 postcodes I'm interested in, and I wonder if there's an easier way. I am also interested in subjective opinions as well as rankings. Any suggestions?
We went to the beach today (Coogee) and it was awesome. But tolls, parking fees, the stress of driving through busy Sydney and having to drive at all after a long day of sun and swimming really sucked. So I am trying to figure out if there is any beach within about an hour of public transport from here (carlingford) and I can't really see any. But I figure metafilter knows better tricks than google maps, right? [more inside]
I am traveling for work. Just lost a filling. Suspect I need at least a temp to get me through as I don't get home til next Tuesday. Anyone got a rec for a dentist who will take a helpless American and hopefully not charge in the thousands? And if there's anyt unique about the process of going to a dentist in Australua that would help too.
So I'm doing my Working Holiday in Australia and I purposely started in Sydney so I could experience the big New Year's celebration here. I did NYC's ball drop in Times Square 3 years ago, and New Year's Eve is the biggest holiday of them all for me. I need the 101 on what NYE in Sydney is like, and what I should do. [more inside]
I'm visiting Sydney this weekend for the Festival of Dangerous Ideas and have all of Friday (and a few hours of Saturday) to kill while my friend is working. I'm from Melbourne and have visited Sydney many times and seen all the Sydney landmarks and touristy spots (The Rocks, Darling Harbour, Sydney Tower, Bridge climb etc) before. [more inside]
In six months I'm travelling to Sydney, Australia to visit a friend and I thought it'd be a great idea to watch the sunset to act as a memory for us both. Where is a good place outside of the city for this?
Currently my partner commutes to work from Enmore to Lane Cove. It is costing around $12 per day, I've googled around for cheaper ways but come up with nothing - are we missing some way to cut the cost or do we have to suck it up? [more inside]
I just moved into a new house (in Sydney). We have three old fashioned looking electricity meters in the meter box. Why are there three? [more inside]
Surprise! I'm going to a black tie event on Saturday night. I have nothing to wear and therefore need to hire a dress. Everything I can find on Google so far is an online order. I would prefer a brick and mortar building where I can try on someone's inventory of dresses; I've done this before in other countries so I know it's A Thing. Where can I do this in Sydney? [more inside]
Asking on behalf of (The Rt Hon.) MP, who currently has spotty internet access while he travels around Australia. Where are the best places to 1) see an improv comedy show in Sydney, 2) see a punk/hardcore show in Melbourne, 3) get to relatively quickly from either of those cities to be able to see the outback (as opposed to the bush, which has already been seen on this trip)? Visiting Sydney at the end of this month. When I'm on vacation it always gets to the end of a long day, I'm tired, hungry, but can never pick a place to eat dinner. Help me plan 8 great locations so that I don't starve! Also, any tips on general Sydney things to do would be appreciated (but mainly asking about dinner locations). Details inside... [more inside]
Asking on behalf of a friend: May be transferred from the US to Australia shortly. What should I be looking for in a relocation package? Special snowflake details inside that may affect your answer! I have been transferred around the US a lot and thus know how to assess a relocation package when it's from point A to point B in the US - and, most importantly, I know when it's not enough and I need to hold out for more. I've never been transferred overseas and the only thing I know right now is that a relo package like the ones I get in the States would probably be insufficient. What should I be looking for? [more inside]
Where can I buy pens in Sydney, and/or who has a wide variety of pens (gel pens, paint pens, that sort of thing)? I am working on my sister's wedding invitations and am rather pressed for time... I am especially interested in the Sakura Souffle pens, if you know of anyone who carries them. [more inside]
Will I even be able to get a job there?? [more inside]
I'm going to Sydney for a weekend and I'm looking for your recommendations of reasonably cheap accommodation - either cheapish hotels or hostels. I'm not looking for anywhere with a party vibe, but I'm open to suggestions apart from that. Ta!
Cleaning my balcony yesterday, I overturned a bench to find these small eggs attached by a fine, stiff filament • • • • (or if not egg sacs, what, fungus maybe?). I'd like to know what will be issuing from them. I'm in Sydney, Australia.
I'm fairly sure this thing I saw this morning is going to be a vertical growing tower for plants. Is it also a Chinese or Japanese character? If it is, what is it? [more inside]
Looking for the tea equivalent of coffee shops in Sydney.Preferably in the CBD/inner city. High Tea is OK, but looking for something more basic than that. I refuse to pay $4.00 for hot water and a tea bag, lol.
I visited New Zealand recently (thanks AskMe for all the help with the itinerary), and happened to try a beer there - Mac's Great White Cloudy Wheat Beer. It seems that it is only available in New Zealand. Is there anything else that might replicate the taste? [more inside]
I've been in Sydney for a while now but still dont have a favorite cafe-hang. Looking for recommendations, preferably but not necessarily in the Surry Hills/Newtown/Inner Westish area, where I could inconspicuously spend the better part of day ploughing through a massive book, with excellent coffee, comfortable seating and minimal distracting muzak.
I have inherited a watch that was purchased a few years ago for about $2000. It has rarely been worn and I think it has all of the box/paperwork with it (from what I can see from similar watches online), including the purchase receipt. My question is where/how can I sell it? Either by listing it online, but there seems to be so many websites, or in person via a second hand dealer or similar? I've seen lots of watch websites, but are some better than others? Especially considering I don't have a profile or history on such sites. Thanks
I am seeking the name of a film, set in post-apocalyptic Sydney (Australia). I could have sworn it had Cassandra Harris in it, but IMDB disagrees. It was filmed and was set in in the early- to mid-80s, and had a bunch of people running around trying to escape the nuclear fallout that hit the Opera House and ended up in the northern beaches. The film wasn't necessarily good, but it resonated. Can you name the film? Thanks!
Why do all (or at least, the vast majority) of flights between Sydney and the U.S. this July/August have layovers in China or Korea? How can I best go about finding a budget ticket that takes a more direct route? [more inside]

I'm looking for a song I heard on the radio a couple of times about 6 or 7 years ago. The music was interspersed with a Spanish language lesson in it that started out seeming normal and got kinkier as it went on. Ring any bells? [more inside]
What's the nearest bed to Arrivals at Sydney airport? I'll be fresh off a 24 hour journey and I can never sleep on planes. I don't mind paying, but any advice on airport hotels, especially any to avoid, much appreciated...

An appeal to the tiny minority of Mefites who are Aussies: I'm taking my kids to Sydney this weekend. We're going to the Harry Potter exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum on Saturday afternoon. What else can we see/do while we're in Sydney? [more inside]
I just got invited to spend a week or so with some friends in Sydney, Australia (yay!). But the flight is going to be long and painful enough that I'd like to go for longer, and probably get a little ways out of Sydney. But I do not want to drive. Is the following feasible, doable without driving, and reasonable for an older (60ish) woman on her own? [more inside]

Sydney vs Melbourne as a pedestrian paradise: I am a sociologist doing a study which involves observing pedestrians/window shoppers/etc. I am based in New York City, which is fantastic for my field of work. In Feb/March, I plan to go to Australia for two months, to either Sydney or Melbourne. I have never been to Australia before. QUESTION: Which city has more of a "pedestrian culture"? That is, which is more of a "walking city?" (If you know New York City, my favorite place to observe is Union Square -- I am looking for a comparable location.) Would prefer a place filled with locals, not tourists. Thanks!

Sydneyfilter: I have a lot of written work to get done and I'd like to take a short break from Sydney to do it. I imagine writing in a quiet room with a view of nature, perhaps taking occasional breaks to stroll in a garden, through the bush or along a beach. Where can I stay that's relatively affordable (under $100 a night), accessible without a car, and no more than four hours from Sydney?
