I have been charged with the task of adding a switch to a network. There are ethernet jack points at each workstation and each of these go back to a network cabinet. Apparently to make the connections live I need to add a switch. Where can I find a tutorial that will quickly get me up to speed with this sort of networking?

I'm extending an wired ethernet LAN to a nearby house. I'm planning to connect a 50m patch cable to the existing bridge router, run it through an existing underground pipe to the other house where it would meet a switch and serve internet via two shorter patch cables (25m?) to two laptops in that house. Can anyone see a problem with this setup? [more inside]

I have been assembling some simple test equipment that involves mating an Omron digital readout to an Omron 0-5VDC pressure transducer. I have been seeing erratic zero fluctuation that appears to coincide with switching the power on and off. My background is electrical, not electronic. I suspect that there could be a voltage spike occurring when the on/off switch is used. The switch is a good quality industrial double pole rocker switch with internal illumination. I want to eliminate possible switch caused spikes as a variable in trying to figure out if anything external is causing this wandering zero. I am familiar with switches that will control spiking in an electrical circuit but not with more sensitive electronics. What type of switch do I look for in my (Digikey) catalog?

Electronics for dummies? I need something very simple. There is one switch and two wires. This intermittent fault on our small company network makes me bang my head on the wall. Metafilter: help me troubleshoot this annoyance. Roughly once a day at no particular time I get the classic windows 'A network cable is unplugged' balloon appear on my desktop. I have a handful of USB devices that I'd like to share between the 2-4 workstations/laptops at my desk. I don't need simultaneous access to a given device from multiple PC's, just the ability to switch which PC each device is assigned to. Here's the catch, though: I want to do the switching on a per-device basis, so standard USB switchboxes (that switch all USB devices at once) won't do the trick. Does such a device exist? I have elderly relatives who no longer can turn or twist the normal switch on a table lamp or touchier lamp. I am looking for an easy ergonomic solution that will allow them to be able to simply turn lamps on and off. I remember recently seeing a replacement switch knob that was designed with 3 flat blades that protruded from the center of the knob; somewhat like the shape of a modern windmill blades. I would appreciate any and all ideas and hints.

My wife has an old laptop that can just barely handle running Windows XP. I've spent the last year acclimatizing her to Firefox and Open Office, so I believe she would be willing to give Linux a whirl, assuming I could find a distro that was usable, attractive, and faster than XP on her laptop. So what should I try? Specs inside. [more inside]

OK - I just bought an iMac to replace our dying Windows machine at home. I've successfully moved over almost everything - email (thanks to emailchemy), bookmarks, contacts, calendar items, documents. But I'm stuck on one thing - how can I reproduce the groups of contacts from our old windows outlook express address in the OS X address book? I would rather not have to recreate them one address at a time if I can avoid it. Thanks!
