Where's a good beginner swing dancing class in Boston?

My parter is an experienced (and patient) swing dancer and I'd like to learn, so I'm looking for a class that gives a gentle intro for people with no experience and plenty of time to practice. Anywhere in Boston accessible by Ⓣ is good; bonus for near JP or the orange line.

I want to hang a rope swing in a public park in London. Should I?

The park near where we live has many tall plane trees. There's a playground where my children often play. One plane tree has a lateral branch over the playground that's ideal for a rope swing. I'm considering just doing it. [more inside]

Good, safe places for me to ballroom/Latin/swing dance in Portland?

Recently moved to Portland, OR. I'm an intermediate ballroom/Latin/swing dancer and I'm overwhelmed by the amount of choices here when I google. In particular I want a nice safe place where I won't get groped or hit on a lot...I'm 30 and a reasonably attractive woman. Where I used to live I basically gave up on social dancing because I couldn't go anywhere without getting groped, and stuck to my Arthur Murray like glue. Any dancers out there that can help me out? Help me Swingify my wardrobe.

I've been taking a Lindy Hop class for about a month and I'm really enjoying it. I'm keen on eventually going out to social dances and events when I feel more confident, but I have no wardrobe to back it up right now. I have a vague idea of what swing era fashion is like, but I'd like to do more research on what's hip, cool, and appropriate. Can anyone suggest sites, blogs, pinterest boards, online shops, etc so I can get a sense of what I should deck out in?

Porch swing recommendations

I live in Toronto and was hoping to get a porch swing for my parents backyard. I was wondering if people knew good stores in Toronto or the GTA where I could get a porch swing and also what people look for when purchasing a porch swing. I like wood but I feel that snow may destroy it quickly.

Hot jazz where the words keep up with the music

My favorite kind of song: fast, swingy jazz with lyrics that are witty and/or intricately rhymed, performed by somebody who delivers the words and the music with equal skill. Examples include Bobby Short singing 'Nagasaki', Ella Fitzgerald singing 'Everything I've Got', and Louis Jordan singing pretty much anything. What other performances should I check out?

Moar music like Blue Vipers (acoustic swing?)!

I love The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn and would like more music like it! Suggestions? I particularly love them live and acoustic and wish their albums were just recorded in a room with a mic or two - so lower fi is cool; More produced isn't what I want. Also particularly love the vocalist and vocal harmonies (although instrumental is great too). Thanks! [more inside]

Is this zoo statement about tree branches (and apes) true?

What's the real reason apes evolved to move through trees using arms rather than legs and a tail; why do they swing rather than jump? Surely not because "a tree branch can hold more weight above than it than below it" (as purported by a suspect sheet of "fun facts" at the zoo). [more inside]

Dancing stinks!

We have a small dance hall space and it starts smelling bad because certain people who come don't wear deodorant, but we can't necessarily tell them to. The dance hall burns incense, but many people are allergic to the incense, like me. Apart from opening the door, which we can't do because people sneak in, what would be a good way to get rid of the smell during the event?

Help my EQ swing!

What iTunes equalizer settings will best compliment swing dance music? I listen to a lot of swing dance music, which includes older R&B/soul as well as contemporary hiphop and some pop. I know that no one equalizer setting will be perfect for such a diversity of styles and that the best test for an EQ setting is actually listening to music, but I'd like some suggestions on where to start for some general settings. Should I just crash a wedding, or is there somewhere else I can dance like that?

I'd like to take my sweetheart dancing tonight in NYC. Not hip-hop or grinding, but something almost like a wedding reception - good classics for dancing, maybe some swing, maybe some rock and roll, maybe some country, maybe the twist - I definitely want to twirl her across the dance floor. We're not expert dancers we just want to go have some fun, and cheap-to-free is good too. We're coming from Astoria but anywhere in the city works for me. Pre-dancing dinner suggestions would be nice too. [more inside]
