I just got a great job at a federal facility as a non-federal employee. Because I'm going to be working in a federal building, I need a background check, physical, and (presumably) drug test. I've smoked pot in the last month, although not many times in the past several months – I shouldn't trigger a concentration-based drug test, but I could trace positive for trace amounts. I feel totally comfortable about the drug test, unless they disqualify me for /any/ amount of THC, I should be fine. The problem comes with the background check, which asks me if I've done any illegal drugs in the past year. [more inside]

I'm an adult learning to swim for the first time. I had a fear of water at first but now I'm able to put my face in the water and swim. In between my swimming lessons, I like to come to the pool and practice the freestyle stroke but I haven't been able to do it because I'm alone and I'm afraid that I'd start flailing and lose my control. What would be the best way to practice my arm strokes and using what equipment? I've tried using the kickboard but every time I let go of one arm, the kickboard goes into the water diagonally so I'm scared to let go of the kickboard. There's a lifeguard at the pool I go to but I still haven't gotten over the nerves.
I really appreciate all of the advice!

I'm an adult learning to swim for the first time at the YMCA. I've only had 1 lesson so far and the instructor seemed encouraging. However, he did not address my fear of water and did not take the time to help me become comfortable with the water (submerging my face in the water, etc.). On the first day, he showed me how to kick while sitting on the pool edge, how to float on my back, how to kick using kickboard, and then he moved on to telling me to put my hands up in a torpedo position, face in the water, then glide forward while kicking. He was on the other side to catch me. I sunk every single attempt and he kept telling me to try again. I was so terrified that I don't want to come back to next class. Since then, I've been coming to the pool and practicing on my own. I feel like I'm more comfortable than the first day but I'm still afraid to come back for the next lesson this Saturday.
This is the first instructor I've ever had so I'm not sure how to judge how he's doing. Do you think I should quit and get another one? The staff members at the Y that I've talked to told me that he's a good instructor but can be a very demanding. Please give me your advice! Thank you!

I have two little boys ages 5 and 3. The five-year old won't put his face in the water, so it is hard to teach him to swim correctly. The younger one is just starting to go in the water, so I would like to do what I can to make him comfortable. What advice can you give me to help teach my children to swim? How can I help my older one get over his dislike of water in the face? [more inside]

Now that WeEndure
is going away, I need somewhere to track my exercise. There are a number of places that have biking and running, but not swimming. I'd prefer simpler to the more complex sites like MapMyRun (which, again, doesn't do swimming, from what I can see). I have seen this
and wondered what things are out there, four years later. Bonus: a place that I can dump all my WeEndure data into so I hit the ground running. [more inside]

As I get older and, perhaps, wiser, I'm looking for smarter ways to train for triathlons. I've had wonderful success with Chi Running and Terry Laughlin's Total Immersion swim program. Are there any similar programs for cycling?

I've just entered a fairly short triathlon - 400m swim (in Sydney Harbour, so not open ocean but not a pool), 8km cycle, 4km run. The route for the cycle and the run is fairly easy and my level of fitness is such that I could definitely do both of those individually with no problem at all. This weekend I'll be doing an 8km cycle followed immediately by a 4km run just to make sure, but I don't foresee any problems. [more inside]

I recently moved to Phoenix and am lucky enough to have a swimming pool in my backyard. It's perfect for water aerobics but not so much for swimming, as one end of the pool is much shallower than the other. I'm looking for good instructional water aerobics videos. Any suggestions? I haven't found much on the web so I'm ok with buying something if it's highly recommended.

Doesn't the underfur removed by a Furminator serve as insulation, waterproofing, and buoyancy for a dog, especially a water dog like a Lab? She never wants to get out of the water and I'm afraid she'll get too cold.

I want to go on a grand adventure, a multi day hike/swim - eg
Hike half a day, swim across lake, hike a bit more, swim out to an island, hike and repeat..etc.
warm water, health environment, lots of short length water crossing (say 200m) and some longer (1 km) are good.
sharks, crocodiles, parasites and icebergs are not.
Where in the world is it possible to do this? [more inside]
