Where to go for a February babymoon, someplace warm?

The husband and I would like to go on a trip in before we have our first child. Our ideal would be a relaxing and beachy vacation spot in the tropics (Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico?)—big bonus if it's a place we might want to return to in later years with our kid or kids! Specific resort/condo/hotel recommendations appreciated. [more inside]

How Helpful Are Swim Lessons for a 2 Year Old?

I've heard mixed things. Some people say that a child at 2 won't get much from swim lessons other than becoming more comfortable in the water, which isn't something you need a paid instructor for. They tell me to just take my kid into the pool with me to play and hang out. What do y'all think?

Drug tests and background checks

I just got a great job at a federal facility as a non-federal employee. Because I'm going to be working in a federal building, I need a background check, physical, and (presumably) drug test. I've smoked pot in the last month, although not many times in the past several months – I shouldn't trigger a concentration-based drug test, but I could trace positive for trace amounts. I feel totally comfortable about the drug test, unless they disqualify me for /any/ amount of THC, I should be fine. The problem comes with the background check, which asks me if I've done any illegal drugs in the past year. [more inside]

How do I practice swimming freestyle if I'm alone?

I'm an adult learning to swim for the first time. I had a fear of water at first but now I'm able to put my face in the water and swim. In between my swimming lessons, I like to come to the pool and practice the freestyle stroke but I haven't been able to do it because I'm alone and I'm afraid that I'd start flailing and lose my control. What would be the best way to practice my arm strokes and using what equipment? I've tried using the kickboard but every time I let go of one arm, the kickboard goes into the water diagonally so I'm scared to let go of the kickboard. There's a lifeguard at the pool I go to but I still haven't gotten over the nerves. I really appreciate all of the advice!

Advice Needed! Should I quit on this swim instructor?

I'm an adult learning to swim for the first time at the YMCA. I've only had 1 lesson so far and the instructor seemed encouraging. However, he did not address my fear of water and did not take the time to help me become comfortable with the water (submerging my face in the water, etc.). On the first day, he showed me how to kick while sitting on the pool edge, how to float on my back, how to kick using kickboard, and then he moved on to telling me to put my hands up in a torpedo position, face in the water, then glide forward while kicking. He was on the other side to catch me. I sunk every single attempt and he kept telling me to try again. I was so terrified that I don't want to come back to next class. Since then, I've been coming to the pool and practicing on my own. I feel like I'm more comfortable than the first day but I'm still afraid to come back for the next lesson this Saturday. This is the first instructor I've ever had so I'm not sure how to judge how he's doing. Do you think I should quit and get another one? The staff members at the Y that I've talked to told me that he's a good instructor but can be a very demanding. Please give me your advice! Thank you!

How do I teach my children to swim? Help me be a better swimming teacher

I have two little boys ages 5 and 3. The five-year old won't put his face in the water, so it is hard to teach him to swim correctly. The younger one is just starting to go in the water, so I would like to do what I can to make him comfortable. What advice can you give me to help teach my children to swim? Now that WeEndure is shutting down...

Now that WeEndure is going away, I need somewhere to track my exercise. There are a number of places that have biking and running, but not swimming. I'd prefer simpler to the more complex sites like MapMyRun (which, again, doesn't do swimming, from what I can see). I have seen this and wondered what things are out there, four years later. Bonus: a place that I can dump all my WeEndure data into so I hit the ground running. [more inside]

First time tri-athlete - any hints and tips?

I've just entered a fairly short triathlon - 400m swim (in Sydney Harbour, so not open ocean but not a pool), 8km cycle, 4km run. The route for the cycle and the run is fairly easy and my level of fitness is such that I could definitely do both of those individually with no problem at all. This weekend I'll be doing an 8km cycle followed immediately by a 4km run just to make sure, but I don't foresee any problems. [more inside]

Water Aerobics Instructional Videos?

I recently moved to Phoenix and am lucky enough to have a swimming pool in my backyard. It's perfect for water aerobics but not so much for swimming, as one end of the pool is much shallower than the other. I'm looking for good instructional water aerobics videos. Any suggestions? I haven't found much on the web so I'm ok with buying something if it's highly recommended.
