In the most recent election thread over on Metafilter blue, a discussion about the British comedy Detectorists and its effect as a balm to us election-weary folks has been at a gentle simmer. I am one more episode from the end (again), and am looking for a new show to watch with my mom that has a similar kind and calming feel. It need not be British (though aren't they just the best at this?), but something available on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime is ideal. [more inside]
I bought a bottle of something similar to a white zinfandel for a dinner party guest who cancelled. She's the only person I know who likes super-sweet white wines. We (stupidly) opened it tonight anyway, thinking that we'd give it a try, and no one could drink more than a few sips- it's so horribly, cloyingly sweet! What other drinks can I make with it to make it drinkable? [more inside]

My wife and I are both working on dieting, focusing on portion control, eating more veggies, and cutting our carbs. It's going OK so far, but my wife has found that she's getting really frequent "sweet" cravings. So, I figured I might as well try asking the internet: What are some good ways to help answer that craving without busting our dieting plans?
I have a large bag of these Vietnamese coconut chips, which are sweet and delicious. While I could easily eat them a handful at a time until they were all gone, I'm wondering if there are any dishes where the crunchiness might add something. For example, I understand some people eat them with fruit and yoghurt; in Vietnam we also had them as part of a fruit drink layered with ice and coconut milk, which was amazing (would love that recipe!) Any ideas?
I can't seem to stomach wine easily, even the smell is pretty awful, but I want to acquire a taste for it for special occasions. I'm tired of being the only person toasting with a coke! I don't like sour, acidic or alcohol tastes, so I may be out of luck, but if anyone has any recommendations I'd really appreciate it. I should also mention that the above mentioned flavours are all usually much worse when cold, so I'm hoping for a good room-temp wine. Thanks in advance!
I've lately been trying to make thai-style glutinous rice but may attempts so far have not been as satisfyingly sticky as I had hoped. I think it may be down to needing a more authentic brand. [more inside]

I've been bitten by the baking bug! I need help figuring out what combination of 2 different recipes (1 savory, 1 sweet) would be perfect for a morning office meeting of 5-6 people that will survive not being refridgerated. Also, simplicity is best since I've only just started to foray into baking. (More details inside.) [more inside]

My dog loves dried sweet potato chews. They go for $20 a bag in the pet store even though the only ingredients are potatoes. It must be that I can make them at home for the cost of a potato. Do I need a fancy food dehydrator or can I just cut the potatoes up into thick pieces and put my oven on 200F for a many hours? Anyone have a specific recipe or experience making them? [more inside]
I'd like to try making barfi, but I've never done it before, and the recipe I have calls for khoya, which I can't get around here.
