So, I own a house. My three kids and I went away on vacation leaving my very needy dogs in the care of a housesitter. The housesitter was an acquaintance: a good friend of a good friend, but someone that I had only personally met a few times. I have non-obvious cameras in my house. Not in the private areas like the bathroom or bedrooms, but in public areas like the living room and kitchen. I, perhaps stupidly, did not tell the housesitter about these cameras and then, guiltily, reviewed the footage upon returning home. Now I don't know what to do. [more inside]
I started a new job last week, which involved registering for a bunch of different tools and services (email, internal tools, ticket tracking system, project management stuff, etc.). Since I needed access to those before I got a chance to set up a password manager, I used a couple duplicate passwords so I could remember them (they were strong passwords, but they fit a pattern that I can remember). Shortly after I signed into a site with one of the passwords I was also using on another site, I got an email from IT saying they'd noticed I'd used duplicate passwords and to change them ASAP. How did they know? [more inside]

The recently released movie Closed Circuit uses London's extensive use of the CCTV technology in ways I had only envisioned in my own screenplays. What movies within the past 10-15 years or so also do this? I am thinking more like how the Bourne movies used the technology than movies like The Conversation and The Lives of Others. What movies use CCTV's in an interesting way? Bonus points if it's in London, but it can be anywhere.
My usually very stay-at-home cat has recently taken to disappearing before I get up in the morning and coming home late in the afternoon. I think a neighbor may be feeding her because, besides the fact that my cat's always been a homebody, I feed her in the morning, so she would likely stay around to be fed unless she had an equally good reason to go elsewhere. When this started last week, she didn't have a collar, so conceivably someone could have thought she was homeless and tried to take her in. But after two days I put a collar on her, with an attached note to the effect of "please don't feed me or take me in", but she's still going off every morning. I miss her and worry that one day she won't return. How can I track her movements? [more inside]

In this New Yorker blog post, Internet Archive's Brewster Kahle mentions this in an answer: "Libraries have had a long history of dealing with authoritarian organizations demanding reader records—who’s read what—and this has led to people being rounded up and killed. As a librarian, you take this very, very seriously." Is there a concise history of this somewhere?
Like many of us here, I am deeply disturbed by the recent revelations about the extent of the NSA's surveillance program. My boss owns the apartment in which I reside. Above the front door is a large and ominous security camera replete with a bank of infrared lights. My comings and goings are recorded and accessible by not only the boss (who was unaware of its existence), but 2 other employees who have no right to watch what I do. Or do they? Can someone answer me: is this scenario legal?

What's the easiest/cheapest way to set up a home surveillance camera that will notify me and stream video for remote viewing/recording if somebody enters my home while I'm gone?
What is the easiest, cheapest, most effective way for me to set up a single motion-triggered surveillance camera at home to verify whether I have a creepy situation going on while I'm gone? If triggered, I want it to alert me remotely, stream video for remote live viewing, and ideally record to the cloud rather than locally for later viewing. I'd like an easy web/desktop interface to control it all. Have you tried one of those kits from X10 for this and did it work well for you? [more inside]

Wired had an article recently about a company whose job it was to sweep Fortune 500 corporate offices and boardrooms looking for electronic surveillance devices. Is this a real problem? Has there ever been a documented case of a large company being bugged by their competitors? My gut is telling me this is a lot of hype.

Why (and what) is my iPhone transmitting while switched off? My (Australian bought, legitimately carrier-unlocked, T-Mobile-SIM'd) iPhone 3GS is switched off (hold down top button, swipe red switch on screen) but connected to wall power and sitting on top of a poorly shielded computer speaker. Almost exactly at 5:00am it uttered the characteristic "dit dit de-dit dit de-dit dit de-dit" of a GSM phone chatting to a cell tower. I switched it off ffs, the GSM radio shouldn't be active! What is it sending to the tower and why? [more inside]

What is the name and who is the author of this science fiction short story about a Utopian Transparent Society
After looking everywhere and which a way, I am at a loss. I am looking for a short story with a near future high tech anarchy as background-- something that resembles David Brin's concept of The Transparent Society, Utopian Version, where every body knows everybody else's business--as opposed to, say, Police Surveillance State On Steroids Big Time where Big Brother knows your business and location as in 1984 meets The Minority Report. I'm currently running a business where I monitor computers for people. I use custom made software that gets by all the anti-malware scanners and through the firewalls. I have been charging $40/hr for the first hour, and $45 for each hour after that. Since most of work may only take 1-4 hours per client I've been told that I'm charging too little. Figures have been thrown at me by friends, family and even clients that I should charge $60, $75 or even $100. What is a fair amount in this business. Yes this involves spying on people at the workplace, churches and spouses. My first question. I've searched mefi for similar stuff and came up empty.
