Sadly I lost a friend to a long battle with cancer last night, her husband and teenage children are without any extended family in the area and will rely on some of us for the next while. Two things:
1 - Can you tell me of things that friends and family have done for you in similar circumstances that really helped at the time: large, small, immediately, over days, weeks, months, whatever. We'll sort out food, the pets and cleaning the house but what else can we do?
2 - Any advice on striking the right balance between giving them their space to grieve and being there to support to them?

Recently, a police officer here in Canada was
killed in the line of duty. He left behind his wife and 3 sons. I'm curious what sort of support, financial and otherwise, is available to her in the coming days, months and years. Does she keep getting his paycheque? Does that stop after a while? I keep thinking that if I were a police officer, and I was killed, I would like my wife and kids to be taken care of like, forever.

My boyfriend's ex-wife is trying to get him to pay more child support. We got a letter showing how much "available income" she has to support the child; included in the calculation is a deduction for the other two children she has with her new husband. How is this possible, when her new husband--who has a larger income than either the ex-wife or my bf--is also responsible for those other two kids? I understand that the new hubbie is not responsible for the support costs of my bf's son--but shouldn't he be responsible for the care of his own kids, such that the ex-wife cannot deduct this cost from her income when determining the percentage of my bf's son's care for which she is responsible?

I'm looking for a reputable computer repair shop in the Phoenix, AZ area. I lent my Compaq laptop (running vista) out to a friend and now it's totally owned by virii, and I don't have the time, patience, wherewithal to fix this level of problem.
Is there a good, independent (not Best Buy) place in town to get this looked at and potentially fixed for a reasonable price? Again, I'm not interested in fixing it myself, I'd rather pay someone else to be frustrated for me.

Air Canada WTF? On Tuesday I took a trip from Laguardia Airport to Pearson Toronto to CDG, Paris on Air Canada. From Toronto to Paris, they lost one of my bags, which wouldn't be terrible except said bas contained 1) My only change of clothes for the next 2 weeks 2) My BFs extra heart medication and 3) I'm leaving for Prague in 4 days and there is still no news. Is there anyone I can call or talk to see that I actually get my stuff before I leave France? Kakfaesque detail follows.

My coworker came to work and shot himself today. I was the only person to talk to him and was one of the first people to reach him after he did it. I'm planning on speaking with the grief counselors they're bringing in tomorrow. But I'm wondering if there are any resources I should know about for people in a situation like mine, specifically: witnesses of the suicide of a coworker or friend. In case the details are relevant: they are below.

I run a moderately popular blog. I'd like to have the Twitter account associated with the URL, but it's suspended -- presumably because somebody used it for evil. I've contacted Twitter support several times, and they make motions like it's possible for me to claim this account but then they just close my ticket (marking it as "solved") with no explanation. I cannot figure out how to get actual support. Has anyone experienced a similar issue? How can I get Twitter support to actually
support me and not mark an unsolved issue as "solved"? Am I simply at the mercy of the Twitter fates?
Yes, I know Twitter is a free product and that I get what I pay for. Thanks.

I have an external usb drive running off my Windows 7 computer. It keeps switching back to Read-Only, so when I try to send files to it, it merely appends a file and adds a number to its name, instead of re-writing the entire file. I've tried to change it back, but it does not stay changed. The minute I refresh the page, the read-only status comes back! Is there some setting I'm missing? Is there something in Windows 7 that's causing this to happen?

In Photoshop 5.5 I was able to create an action to resize a layer/selection to a maximum width (say, 200 px). I could quickly select objects of varying initial sizes, run the action, and voila, everything fit neatly in a column. I've had Photoshop CS4 for over a week and can't figure out how to replicate this; my resizing seems to always be happening as a percent of the original size.
