How should people deal with screw-ups?

I am a recent law school grad, who went in with the intent of going into government/politics (i.e. not to be a lawyer) and was fortunate enough to find such a job. I did not want to take the bar, nor needed to, but decided to do so anyway because it seemed like I should (I know, terrible reason). I know for a fact that I have not studied enough and am going to fail. [more inside]

How to support the abused

I've started to date again after the end of an eight year relationship. The good news is I've met an amazing woman and we're starting to develop a more serious relationship. Support, not commitment, or something

I think my dotted-line boss is going to come out to me as a transgendered person. The idea of introducing gender and sexuality into professional relationships is anathema to me. I will not deny her any support. I am genderqueer but don't trouble to make it obvious at work: work is a place I go to be engaged and interested, not a place for emotional entanglements. So what do I do? [more inside]

How to support a friend whose spouse is in hospital?

I have a good friend who lives in a different city to me (a 8 hour-plus drive away from me.) His spouse is currently in hospital due to an unexpected episode of mental illness, and is not expected home again for several weeks. I want to provide both emotional and practical support to my friend, but I am limited in what I can do due to distance. What can I do to make my friends life easier and/or happier during this difficult and sad time? My friend is comfortable as far as medical bills and living expenses go (we live in Australia, which has free hospital care, so so the Government will be paying all the medical bills), but he is obviously very emotionally distressed by his wife's unexpected ill-health.
