I am having a hard time getting enough calories and nutrients in my body each day. Part of the issue involves inconsistent access to food due to family stuff; the rest involves a loss of appetite as I progress through treatment for bipolar II. I'd love to be able to keep something in my room that can help me stop going to sleep hungry, but I need it to be soy, walnut, and coconut free. What might be a good interim solution as I work back towards eating proper meals every day?
I’m a 31-year-old iron-deficient menstruating lady. My doctor would like my ferritin level to increase before my husband and I try to conceive. However, iron supplements make me feel awful (not just for digestive reasons). Details inside. [more inside]
Which vitamins and supplements, if any, are worth actually taking on a regular basis? No snow-flaky details here, just a regular, out-of-shape, delivery food-eating, occasional exerciser who sits in an office all day. [more inside]
MeFi, if you could please suspend your disbelief, I would really appreciate some advice. After years of suffering from a number of issues that were resistant to various forms of traditional and alternative medicine, I've made something of a hobby out of experimenting on myself and creating my own plant extracts. Most recently this has involved creating a semi-proprietary tincture made from high-grade white/green teas, and combining said tincture with other supplements. Through an exhausting process of trial-and-error, I've come up with some unique concoctions that truly help me. I want to see if they can help other people, but I have no idea how to take the next step. [more inside]
I have a question about GABA and Omega 3 supplements. Mostly if and what to take. [more inside]
I've been trying to cut my weight for the last 6 months or so and have been keeping meticulus records of everything I've eaten. And in the last 30 days I've hit the RDA for calcium 4 times and am usually half or less most days. I don't really like dairy as much as other food types so I've cut it out for the most part. Would it be a bad idea to take citrate pills with 40% the RDA just so I can get somewhat close? I've also been taking magnesium pills at night to try and help myself become regular in the morning again and it has worked for the most part. I just don't see how it's possible to get everything a body needs on 1900 calories a day especially when I'm human and like to have stuff with next to no nutrients at all some times. Should I be taking this stuff? Or should I try harder to get it all from diet?
I have blepharitis, a condition that makes my eyelids very prone to chalazions (warning: gross). As far as I can tell, this isn't something that can be cured per se, but there are things that can be done to lessen the symptoms. What works for you, fellow blepharitis sufferers? [more inside]
I suffer from anxiety, anhedonia and depression. I just had to wean off of yet another AD, and am tired of searching a medication that treats my symptoms with minimal side effects. My therapist suggested looking into Sam-e and ashwagandha in the meantime, and my psych doc said it would be worth a try. Has anyone had success with supplements such as Sam-E? What did you take, and did you notice a difference? I'm trying to sort through what is scientifically-backed and what is woo. Anecdata is welcome as well. [more inside]
A couple of years ago I discovered that certain types of white teas, which are free of leaves and contain only tea buds, make a huge difference in my ability to concentrate. I've become sort of dependent on them to do my job, and so I'm constantly making tea throughout the day (and thus constantly running to the bathroom). All of the tea/catechin (tea antioxidant) extracts I've purchased don't seem to have the same effect on me, regardless of whether or not they contain caffeine. In researching the best way to make my own, I found this 2013 study comparing various methods of making antioxidant-rich extracts from tea, which concluded "the optimal extraction conditions were determined using 40% ethanol with ultrasound-assisted extraction method for 2 h at 40 °C." I have a 'condition.' There is a supplement touted as a miracle pill for those with it. Recently I went to purchase another bottle of my trusty supplement, which costs $59 for 60 pills, and I came across a few reviews stating that the content in the capsules is just plain white sugar. I thought what a joke, but I cut one of mine open anyway, and lo and behold, it looks, tastes, and smells exactly like white refined sugar! [more inside]
I bought this product "Multiple Minerals" because I was trying to follow a particular healthy skin diet. I read that I should take Maganese, Silica and a few other things this product had but I just noticed the amounts are around .2 % of the daily allowance average. I'm confused as to how this would benefit me. Is this product a total rip off?
Ok, this won't be long. Anyway, I'm not too crazy on the supplements department, usually just taking multivitamin along my normal diet, and fish oil. I decided to buy a higher quality one, and got a "Highly Dosed Max Vit-Min" recommended by the lady at the supplement store, because I excercise on a fairly regular basis recently. I'm not too scared anything can happen, but I'm confused by the amounts on the label and recommended daily value (RDV in the US, I guess?) percentages. For example, Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is 80mg, 7273% RDV. Riboflavine is also 80mg, 5714% RDV. Isn't that overkill to take daily (seriously seven thousand percent above the RDV )? Can I get hypervitaminosis from this stuff, or does the fact that I excercise somehow modify my requirements? For reference on the low end, Calcium for example is 8mg, 1% RDV. Or am I just being silly and not understanding labels??

I am in the last two weeks of writing my master's thesis and I was wondering what herbs or supplements others have found useful for writing. Focus is part of it, but I also need to produce and get in the flow, so to speak. It comes sometimes, but I can never force those really productive moments. I have a cupboard full of various herbs, but no time to experiment. Wondering what has worked for other, including combinations. [more inside]

My doctor wants me to take red yeast rice supplements to lower cholesterol. However, I read that it is illegal to sell red-yeast rice supplements in the USA that contain the active ingredient (natural statins). If this is correct, then taking them is obviously a waste of time and money. Can anybody confirm the efficacy of red-yeast rice supplements?

Book-rec-filter: I'm looking for a book for a friend, who has been a whole list of multivitamins, prescriptions and nutritional supplements for her condition. Is there is a book out there that discusses this? [more inside]

I'm in a research trial testing if N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC - an antioxidant) has a beneficial effect on mood (etc.) I started taking the NAC last night (on an empty stomach), and vomited twice upon awakening. I just had another dose, with lunch, and vomited again. I feel fine apart from this, and I read that NAC can cause nausea / vomiting. Should I keep on trucking, i.e., will my body get used to the substance? The research clinic is closed until second week of Jan! [more inside]
