Looking for a reasonably priced hotel in Washington, D.C. for a trip we are planning to take this August. Any thoughts on the possibility of commuting downtown from the burbs each day to visit the sites?

New Jersey-Filter: Two questions. First, can you recommend any great B&Bs in Monmouth County? Second, if you had the aim of introducing two close friends to summer in the Garden State, with the ulterior motive of disabusing them of anti-Jersey stereotypes, where would you take them and what would you do?

I would like to be a tour guide this summer before starting law school, ideally in Charleston. How difficult will it be to find a job, and how should I go about it? Is it at least break-even, financially speaking? [more inside]

What can I do with myself for two weeks in July? My son and his father will be traveling to England with the kid's choir, and I'll be home in Fairfield County, Connecticut (about 45 minutes by commuter train from NYC), probably feeling horribly lonely. [more inside]

I need recommendations for a (travel?) fan that is small enough to not take up much space when packed in a bag, but that nevertheless kicks out a very decent breeze. AC power (not batteries) very much preferred, since it will be used near-constantly and I'd eat through zillions of batteries otherwise. Reasoning explained after the break. [more inside]

I'm in school in the US- I'm interested in finding short-term programs abroad in the summer term (volunteer/intern/or other) that are fairly inexpensive. I'm also interested in doing something that stays away from a vacation-volunteering type experience. Preferably to Latin America or Asia. Any ideas/thoughts for basic resources to get started with? A lot of web searches turn up programs that are very expensive and seem to be geared at rich American youth.
