[exhausted-athlete-music-filter] What songs will carry you up any hill? I am part of a university sports team that is to compete in a one day, 18 leg, relay race over 45 minute distances in running/inline-skating/street-biking and mountain-biking.

I am in the process of pimping our tour bus with a sound system. I hope that music will lift our athletes' up-hill spirits throughout their gigs.

What music keeps you going and going and going asking for another hill to come?

Whenever I hear this song, it feels like I've just lost a loved one. Also feels as if it's snowing outside.

Classical preferred. No vocals or drums please.

I need classic guitar rock recommendations in case I ever get a black '67 Impala! Due to my obsession with the tv show Supernatural I have started to get into the rock music that is so dominant in the show (big departure from my usual music of indie folk and musicals.. my lastfm account didn't know what hit it). Having downloaded all the music featured in the first two seasons (100+ songs) I'm really loving it, finding it the perfect type of music to have on my ipod while at work. Basically I'm looking to expand on what Supernatural has already given me. Suggestions?

To give you a sense of type of stuff I am looking for, the songs I have especially loved and am looking for more of are:

Can you suggest some comic books in trade paperback based on what I have already read and enjoyed? Before I'm pummeled with links to this Ask MeFi thread, I've already read it and am looking for more personalized recommendations based on MY tastes

I've recently started to delve into comics. Here's a list of what I've already read and liked:

- Watchmen
- The Dark Knight Returns
- League of Extordinary Gentlemen
- Invincible
- Y: The Last Man
- World War Hulk
- The Ultimates
- Ultimate X-Men
- Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps
- Marvel Zombies
- The Goon

My tastes tend to be a little eclectic. I love the superhero stuff, especially Hulk and Invincible. But I also LOVE Y and The Goon. I prefer to read things I can get in trade paperbacks. Ok Hive, hit me with your best suggestions!

Games to convert non-gamers

What (ideally web-based) game would you suggest to non-game playing business folks to teach them that games are (a) fun and (b) more than just the stereotypical shoot-em-up or puzzle game they vaguely remember from their Atari 2600 or their kid's DS? I have a book coming out on video games and business. Hopefully, lots of business people who haven't played games before will buy the book and read it. On the book's webiste, I want to point these people to a game or two that will emphasize the main points of the book. Namely, that games are not just for kids, and that the kind of engagement and entertainment that games create can be used for everything from training to recruiting to marketing to innovation.

In an ideal world, I'd make them play Civilization, the Sims, Shadow of the Colossus, and Portal; but, unfortunately, that isn't possible. So what web game or games would you suggest? Downloadable demos might also work.

Where should I go for arts/electronics/performance stuff?

Help me figure out what to do with some travel money! Specifically interested in arts / electronics / performance festivals, but any suggestions are welcome. As part of a grant I received, I have a not insignificant amount of money that I have to use specifically for travel. The grant is specifically for theater, but the travel doesn't necessary have to be. My interests are pretty wide-ranging, but I'm definitely interested in performance and technology.

Things I've thought of:
- Las Vegas! (Seriously.)
- Disney World! (Also seriously.)
- Ars Electronica! (But, is this a reasonable thing for me to go to, as an english-only speaker?)
- Venice Biennale!

Have you been to any great festivals? Or places that were awesome?

LA LOCAL MUSIC

LOS ANGELES LOCAL BANDS, recommend me. I used to cover local music in Ann Arbor. Now that I've moved to LA, I'd like to engage in some more blatant localism, to cop from JFA. I read the Weekly, City Pages, Onion and Record. I keep up with a couple of local blogs. Still, I want more, especially based on the WEST side, including West LA, Westwood, Santa Monica, Venice and Culver City.

Please tell me: Their name, where they're based, WHAT THEY SOUND LIKE, whether they have shows coming up, whether they have records out, WHETHER THEY HAVE FREE SAMPLE MUSIC UP ANYWHERE.

I tend to favor weirdo punk like No Age, Crystal Antlers, Underground Railroad to Candyland, as well as pop, hard rock, jazz (preferably freakout/skronk jazz), metal and rap. But the important part is that they're local and they're playing out, and, ideally, I don't have to drive for an hour to see them.

I have been charged with developing a employee suggestion system. Has anyone seen a organization do it right? My challenges are in eliciting valuable suggestions ( not complaints ), recognizing contributions, and defining what suggestions are good versus those that are bad. Has anyone seen a system that actually works, gets people engaged, and gets results?

Cold as ice. Or maybe not quite that cold.

Where can I go on holiday in March/April - if I want to go somewhere cold? I miss winter.

Thanks to a well-timed move to Singapore, I haven't experienced temperatures under 25C in over a year, and it's making me nostalgic for cold weather. Which cities could I visit if I want to go somewhere chilly?

A few data points:
* It'll probably be in March or April sometime, but the timing is pretty flexible around there. (And yeah, I'm from the southern hemisphere; cold weather in March is a novelty);
* I can't ski or snowboard, so ski resorts are probably out;
* English-speaking - or English-friendly - would be best. My French only goes as far as "bonjour" and "un jus d'orange, s'il vous plait";
* If there's something science-geeky to see or do there, that would be awesome; my camera's feeling a bit unloved and underutilised, so photogenic or creativity-inducing spots are good as well.

I was vaguely looking at Tokyo, or the northern bits of the USA (a friend lives up in Minneapolis), but am open to any weird and wonderful ideas.

My apologies in advance for furthering the stereotype. I'm a girl, I like video games, but I lean towards puzzles games & sims... & my skills suck. My boyfriend is a video game collector & fairly avid player, as it is, his interest in types of games & his skill level are a fair bit different than my own. We recently got a PS3 & I'd like to expand the library by adding a few new games for myself (I'm looking for older stuff preferably: PS2 or even PS1 games). I like to play, but often have trouble finding games... so here I am turning to the MetaFilter Suggestion Engine. The problem, to me, seems to be that the catalogue of games for Playstation is enormous & much more "hardcore-gamer" oriented than the Nintendo systems. I've looked at Metacritic, but it's overwhelming & hard to pinpoint games I might like.

Games that have held my interest in the past:

I'm also a fan of The Sims (1 & 2) on the PC & enjoy Loco Roco on the PSP. Last example, we bought Kingdom Hearts (PS2) yesterday & I enjoyed that as well, it's different than other games I've played & I think it will end up being too hard for me in the long run, but I like the gameplay.

P.S. I did find other similar threads & have Katmari Damacy on my list to add to our library, I'm just hoping for more suggestions to fit my interests.

Condom recommendations, anyone? So we've talked about the difference between ribbed and non-ribbed, but I'm looking for any other suggestions of brands, varieties, etc. This is for penis-in-vagina sex.

Neither of us have latex allergies, but if you have a favorite non-latex condom, you may as well mention it as well, in the interest of making this As Useful As Possible.

Obviously, the ideal thing to do is to try a bunch out. But does anyone have any particular favorites?

I was recently given a 20$ itunes card, and I've decided to use it all on This American Life podcasts to listen to on my morning commute. Which episodes should I get? I already have all the free weekly downloads so far this year. I tend to like the more light-hearted episodes as opposed to the really sad and/or political ones (crying on the bus is embarrassing), but I'm open to any and all suggestions. Suggestions of other podcasts that are similar in tone or content are welcome as well, as are ideas on how I can get Ira Glass to marry me (yeah, I know he's already married, but still).

Help me find other games in the same vein as Seven Kingdoms or, failing that, Netstorm.

Looking for another game in the same vein as Seven Kingdoms or, failing that, Netstorm. Both of these games held great allure for me when they first came out (and off and on over the years since). Now, while I'm currently loading them both up to play again, my appetite has grown to the point that I desire something more.

I fell in love with the resource/trade system of Seven Kingdoms, and Netstorm was just a very unique concept to me, a combination of Magic: The Gathering, Street racing with Pink Slips, and a floating island background that has really stuck with me through the years.

So, what do you say, fellow AskMeFites? Any ideas that might appeal to a mind like mine (for the record, also a fan of Alpha Centauri, best Civ game ever!)?

With $450, what digital video camera should I get?

With $450, what digital video camcorder should I buy? I really like the Sony DCR-DVD 105 but I'm unfamiliar if that's the best camera for my money. I noticed I can get that camera online for around $400, which leaves me some money to buy an extended battery. Optical zoom is certainly important, which is why I chose the 105 > 205. Are the benefits of the 205 more important than the relatively weak optical zoom? I'll be using the camera for amateur-type things -- family events, fun stuff, etc. Nothing professional. Thanks!

Help picking web page applications please !

I'm asking for advice on which web applications you would recommend to a person wanting to start their own web-page. I am new to web-page design and want to get up and running on a simple web-page relatively quickly and easily. I'm not afraid of trying to create some of my own design as I know a little HTML and the bare basics of web design - CSS etc -- it's just I haven't used it in real life yet. My e-mail provider (runbox) provides free web-site hosting and I needed to buy a domain name which I did. I want to start my own web page for personal use on items such as pictures, surveys or polls, blogs, discussions etc. My domain provider uses the following applications and I'm asking for advice on which applications a new user, relatively green on the tech side, should use. See below for the list of supplied web applications (if that is what you call them). Here is the list. I'm confused as to what I should use, or even more importantly, what not to use. Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance...

How can I replace Outlook?

I'm looking for a personal organizer program or web service or whatever to replace what I currently use Outlook for. (More inside.) I'm also looking for some grammar, cause apparently I ain't got none.

I want to switch email programs, because I don't particularly like Outlook's interface or bugs or the way it loves to crash. But I love the calendar, and use it as my organizer. I'd be using Thunderbird in a second if I didn't need that.

So, I had the idea that I'd write my own web-based organizer. But that'd be a lot of work. And I'm lazy. So what are some recommendations for decent personal organizers (of the stand-alone-local-program kind, the install-on-your-web-space kind, or the use-our-free-service kind)?

Laptop Question

Another laptop question. I want to buy a laptop. I’ve read the other askmes, but I’m still horribly confused. I was at Sam’s Club and they seemed to have good deals on a Compaq and two HPs ($1100 - $1600). The guy working there pointed me to the Compaq when I told him that I store a lot of pictures and mp3s on my harddrive.

I’ll use is primarily for writing, watching movies, and internet surfing. I want it to be lightweight and have a nice screen in size and picture quality. I also want it to be fast. I need both wireless and modem capabilities. I’ll also want to add wireless keyboard and mouse for when I’m using it at home. I’m also thinking about getting a wireless printer/scanner/fax.

Currently, I have a pc with a cable modem. The guy downstairs installed a Belkin wireless router on my system so that he can use my internet connection. Does whatever laptop that I buy have to be compatible with the router so that I can use the wireless?

Customer service is also really important to me. I want to be able to call 24/7 and talk to someone that will actually help me fix whatever is wrong.

One of the plusses of purchasing from Sam’s Club is that I can return it for any reason for several months.

I don’t want to spend more than $1500.

Suggestions?

Recommend some modern synthpop (aka. futurepop. aka. technopop. aka whatever else) I've been listening to the likes of VNV Nation and Covenant (amongst other similar industrial-tinged bands) for a while, but lately I've been really digging on the old-school stylings of ladytron.

Anyone have other recommendations for such synth-based (but modern -- no 80s-era stuff) music?

Books featuring characters from other books? I'm a big fan of Gregory Maguire's work (fairytale/book characters), and Was, by Ryman (using Baum and Oz). I just came across Mr. Timothy (a grown-up Tiny Tim), and loved it too. Any more I should read? And does this subgenre have a name or anything?
