Once or twice a week at least, I hear a subway announcement that the line is running with delays "due to a disabled train." This might signify that the train is five minutes later than you expected, or two hours later. Does anyone know exactly what "a disabled train" means? [more inside]

I'm trying to compile a list of subway or light rail systems that are open all night. So far all I have is the New York subway and the Chicago El, but there's got to be more than that. There's a lot of cities in the world!

I'm relatively new to New York and ride the subway every day. When I'm on the above-ground lines I notice another "fourth" rail in between the two running rails that doesn't look like it is used, but is securely tied down. Sometimes there's even a fifth rail, also in the middle. Usually this rail doesn't run continuously and it occasionally curves or has other oddities. What is this fourth rail for? [more inside]
