The lease is up on our current vehicle (a BMW X1), so we're shopping. I think this time it's a buy, but we'd like to stay with a wagon-y or small SUV shaped thing. Bonus points if it's capable of light towing (think tiny travel trailer). [more inside]
I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback. I have what I suspect is a significant engine problem. I have data. I have a parts car. I could use some advice. [more inside]
After eight car-free years using public transportation, I am moving to a new region where I’ll need to own a car. I’m pretty sure I’d like to get a Subaru, but am stuck between the Impreza hatchback, Crosstrek, or Forester. [more inside]
The IMMI GO looks interesting, since it also looks semi-portable for travelling, but doesn't yet have IIHS ratings. The seat is only available through the website, so it has no user reviews on Amazon. Does anyone have personal experience with this seat? [more inside]
I am in the process of buying a new car and I think I have it narrowed down to a 2016 Mazda3 or a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. Manual either way. [more inside]
We just got a used 2012 Subaru Impreza hatchback that only came with one key. We'd like another one, but we don't really want to pay a Subaru dealer $250 to make it. We're looking for a "valet key," not necessarily the remote entry key—no schmancy fob necessary. I did a little googling and it looks like you can't simply take your key to the local locksmith. The key blank contains a chip that requires programming to match your vehicle, so it's not a simple fix like I thought. Is there a way to do this that's cheaper than just having the dealer handle it?
I found out today that my 2001 Subaru Forester may need a new catalytic converter, which all told is probably going to run me something like $1000. I already did this in 2013. Is it time to sell this car, or do I stick with the wisdom that you just keep repairing until you can't repair anymore? [more inside]
In the spirit of this thread, I'd like to ask for opinions from people who have or have had a Subaru Legacy, Mazda 6, or Toyota Camry (hybrid or regular). We're having a second baby in July, and we don't think two car seats and all the kid paraphernalia (we also have a 2.5 year old) will fit in our 2004 Honda Civic. We're looking at new cars. My wife and I are moving cross country from Denver to Orlando, FL. We have two cars and a 1400 sq. ft. house full of furniture and stuff. We have looked into renting trucks and ABF U-pack and they all seem prohibitively expensive, eg. in the few thousand dollar range. Plus, if we rent a truck we have to trailer our other car. Our latest idea is to rent a small U-haul trailer, get rid of A LOT of our stuff, and trailer out there what we need in two or three trips. We have until about June 1st to be completely moved. However, the U-Haul trailers are heavy --about 1000 lbs-- and our car can only tow 1500lbs (2014 Subaru Crosstrek). This doesn't leave much room for things. Our latest idea is to buy a second-hand cargo trailer, about 5x8 ft, for $1500 or so, and use that. The trailers we have looked at weigh more like 700lbs. Then, when we are done with the trailer, we can sell it at a small loss. Is this a terrible idea? Has anyone pulled a trailer with such a small car? How much stuff can we carry and not exceed our 800lb limit?
Can you tell me which fuse to pull to kill the door ajar light on the dash of a Subaru Forester 1998? [more inside]
We're just about at the point where it is time to trade in our little 2007 Mazda 3. It's been a fine car for us, but now that we have a car seat in the back, things are feeling a bit tight. We've also found ourselves putting money into it lately--$3000 in the last four or 5 months--and so we're starting to think about buying a new-to-us vehicle. [more inside]
Car Talkers of MeFi, help me solve a mystery! My 2001 Subaru Forester had a cylinder misfiring: car shook, check engine light flashed. Then it healed itself and the mechanic couldn't tell what was wrong, or that anything was wrong at all, so I brought it home. Then it started misfiring again tonight. Then it healed itself partway, but the check engine light is still on. What should I think and what should I do? Details below the fold. [more inside]
I often listen to audio books on CD in my 2014 Subaru Impreza. When I turn the CD player on, the volume doesn't start at full blast -- it sort of fades in. And when I turn the CD player off, the sound doesn't stop instantly -- it fades out. I find this annoying. Is there some setting that I can adjust to make the CD player come on and off instantly? I looked through the manual, but I couldn't find anything, and I'm finding it hard to Google. Thank you!
I'm looking for recommendations for a trustworthy Subaru mechanic in the Middletown/Cromwell CT area. [more inside]
My iPad sets off the passenger seat belt alarm on my 2013 Subaru CrossTrek when I put it on the seat. Does anyone know exactly what's going on here and if there is a solution other than disabling the alarm or clicking in the belt when their is no one in the seat? [more inside]
2013 Subaru Crosstrek XV got 32-33 highway mpg last year. Now it gets 28. [more inside]
We started having trouble with our car almost a year ago. We paid $1500 for a repair that failed, and the mechanic tried twice more without additional charges. Now, it’s failed again, but the mechanic had heart surgery and closed down the shop, and I haven’t been able to reach him. Is there anything left to do, or do we just have to accept that we’re out the money without a fix, and start over with someone new? [more inside]
Our car saga continues (1, 2). We took some test drives over the weekend, and it's likely we'll make some moves in the near future to buy an Outback or Forester. As a first time buyer of a used car, what should I ask/look for personally, separate from the inspection to be performed by my independent mechanic? And how much oxidization is too much oxidization under the hood, anyway? [more inside]
Our mechanic has fixed our car from last week's question, but now I think we'll probably just get another used car. The Boston winters have convinced us we'd like something with good handling in ice and snow. We're not really SUV people. Because of their reputation for reliability (and ubiquity in the region), we're leaning towards a used Outback. Do you have any recommendations or tips 1) about buying a used car in MA generally, and 2) about buying a used Outback in particular? [more inside]
We're shopping for a gently-used Subaru Outback, and just spent the weekend looking at the 4-5 options that met our criteria within a 50-mile radius. The one that seemed to be in the best shape (not too many miles, not too old, one previous owner, well-treated, etc.) happens to be the turbo model. I've never owned a turbo car before; what are the pros and cons? [more inside]
Have an 05 Subaru Legacy. ~70k miles. The check engine light comes on reliably with wide open throttle (and considering I'm in Pittsburgh, the land of bridges and merge points...). The diagnostic code says low voltage on bank 1 sensor 1. Should I just swap the O2 sensor? I ask because I don't really understand why I'd only be getting the low voltage code with WOT.
I need new tires for my Subaru, but am overwhelmed by the choices, help me understand what I am looking for? [more inside]
I am looking for a Subaru enthusiasts group in the Puget Sound Area or nearby. I have an older Outback wagon, nothing fancy...and would love to find a "general" Subaru club, or more specifically, one that focuses on the off-road capabilities of Subarus of any kind. Most of the Subaru clubs I see are all about the WRXs/ pimped out street car type.
Which carmakers these days (that sell in the US) have really good build quality? I'm thinking high quality interior materials, excellent fit and finish, as well as well thought out interior components like control layouts, displays, and compartments? Maybe carmakers (or models) that are known for little surprising details? I'm now starting to look for a smaller sedan or maybe hatchback/wagon under $40K. Some of the models I'm looking at so far are the Volvo S60/V60, Subaru Legacy/Impreza, Toyota Prius, Audi A4, maybe BMW X1.
Buying a Subaru Legacy this weekend, need some advice! [more inside]

I've always heard, "Don't buy a first-run car, wait until the model has been in production for a few years." But, I'm really interested in the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek. Would the fact that it's essentially a jacked-up Impreza offset that rule of thumb? Or should I stay far away from being one of the first US owners of this vehicle? [more inside]
Should I buy a Subaru Impreza with a rebuilt title in Michigan? I'm looking at two Impreza hatchbacks, both 2006 models. One of them has about 60,000 miles, and according to the seller he has only replaced the hood and the front bumper. The other has about 50,000 miles, and the seller claims he has just replaced the rear quarter panel and the hatchback door. He's asking $7,900 for either one. Is this a scam? [more inside]
Should we be wary of this rather low-mileage used car? What should we be looking out for? [more inside]
Our wagon has a quirky automatic transmission—the same problem with little change for six years: Sometimes it won’t shift into drive, but it will always always engage in reverse. The go-to fix? Drive backward to a slope that enables a rolling start forward, shift into drive and tap-tap the gas until, eventually, *clunk* it engages. Diagnosis? [more inside]
Looking for a Brooklyn car mechanic recommendation for my 1999 Subaru. Check engine light just came on and it's overdue for a tune-up. Much thanks.
