Thems are fighting words! (Takes him a while to boot up)

In the early 1990s I saw a bizarre marketing video for OS/2. It was a cartoon of about 20 min. It featured anthropomorphic computers with screens for faces walking around a Wild West town. The DOS Brothers (which include DOS and WIN) overrun the town's sheriff, OS/2 V1.0. Then the new marshal, OS/2 V2.0 comes into town and cleans things up. Is there somewhere I could see a copy of this video or are there even any records that it existed? [more inside]

Is there a way filter identical posts out of Craigslist?

Recovering from mental illness while on (likely limited) disability

I have a relatively short amount of time to get out of my dark, scary, and dysfunctional places and "rejoin society". I keep going through cycles of pushing too hard and then not pushing at all (while feeling shitty and guilty about it). How can I develop more patience with myself? And at the same time, are there ways to use the freedom I have right now to ensure I end up making adequate progress? [more inside]

Short animated film about monkeys and happy dancing bananas??

I'm beginning to think I imagined this one, but I'm pretty sure it's real. A bunch of years back, maybe ten years, I saw a short animated film, maybe three or four minutes long, about dancing monkeys and dancing bananas. It was pretty awesome. I can't seem to find the damn thing again, though. Help? [more inside]

Keystone → UC Denver morning of 3 April

I need to go from Keystone to the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus the morning of 3 April 2015. So far, my best option seems to be to take an early morning Colorado Mountain Express shuttle to Denver International Airport, and then take a taxi to UC Denver. The first CME shuttle that goes directly downtown doesn't arrive until 12:30 p.m. I don't want to rent a car. Are there better options?

What is the correct A/C refrigerant pressure for '04 Scion xB?

What is the proper air conditioning refrigerant pressure for a 2004 Scion xB? Should the pressure reading be made at a specific RPM? My A/C has been slowly loosing cooling over the last couple of years, now it really only cools well when traveling above 35~ mph, not so well at all in stop-and-go situations. Does it sound like I am on the right track to recharge the system? Works pretty well at steady-state speeds...

What were these purple children's records?

When I was a kid in the US in the early 80s, we had a series of children's stories on records. The one I particularly remember was about a colorful African warrior's shield, possibly told from a child's perspective. I'm pretty sure the album covers were purple. That's about all I've got. Any idea what the series or this particular story was? [more inside]

My phone doesn't know me anymore.

Up until a week or two ago, my phone's predictive text function predicted not just which word I was typing, but also which word I was likely to type next. It used an algorithm which not only paired common words, but which (and this is the important bit) also learned which words I used frequently. Now that's not happening any more. Predictive text is still working, but it doesn't seem to be learning my vocabulary any more. How can I make this work again? [more inside]

80 Bob Dylan covers released as singles in one 1965 fortnight?

Yesterday I was reading an article written by Johnny Black about Bob Dylan in an old (November 1998) MOJO magazine, and was intrigued by the following statement: "In one fortnight at the end of 1965, 80 cover versions of Dylan songs were released as singles." Is there any way I could find out exactly what those 80 singles were, short of writing to MOJO or Johnny Black and asking for the source of an article from well over a decade ago? Have any official data been retained (by, say, recording industry bodies or Dylan's publishers) pertaining to single releases during the mid-60s? Or have any Dylanologists organized such data?

Why did the Russian cut a hole in his shirt for his necklace?

A couple months back I was loading a truck and the Russian/Slavic-looking/sounding driver (and the name of the truck line/owner printed on the truck was definitely Slavic) had a hole cut in his shirt and his necklace/pendant was pulled thru the hole so that it was visible. My somewhat foggy memory thinks it was something religious icon-y. My question: Is this something other than an individual quirk and if so can you tell me about it?

Copying tables within a MS Word protected form

Language learning website using bilingual stories?

I came across a very neat online language learning tool a few weeks ago, but I didn't bookmark it and now I can't find it again. Basically it worked like this: you choose a preset text or story (I think they were mostly fables and fairy tales), your native language, and the foreign language you're trying to practice. Then it shows the text of the story with a few of your native words replaced with their foreign equivalents, letting you learn them in context. [more inside]
