Unix mavens: is there a way for ls on a Mac OS X install to alphabetize its listing case-insensitively, while still preserving any other ls flags you may be using? If not, does another ls variant offered by anybody offer case-insensitivity, and if so, how can I supplant one with the other, without risk of any harm to anything else on my system? (If it matters, my shell of choice is tcsh.)

Is there any kind of critical consensus about the claim made by Henry Binder and Hershel Parker in the 1980s that previous editions of Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage were prepared with cuts demanded mostly by the original publisher and that the edition most people have read is thus much less darkly ironic than it should be, and that Binder's new presentation is a more accurate representation of Crane's original intent?

Some months ago, I came across a map created by (I think) a sociologist, depicting one student's daily travel routines in (I think) Paris. It shows clearly that the subject's life clusters closely around home, work, and university. It is not from Strange Maps, and Google is not helping. Has anyone else seen this?

What is the name of the Mad TV skit with the guy at the car rental counter(?) who goes to sit on a vinyl couch, which makes a farting noise, and everyone thinks the guy farted? He tries to repeat the noise while shouting out protestations like, "It was not me, it was the couch!" and, "I would never poot in public!" This was from early on in the show - maybe 1997 or so? Bonus points if you can find it online for viewing.

I'm looking for a short mystery stories book I read in a library. One of the stories is where a character comes up a flight of stairs and thinks he sees something (a murder?) in someone's apartment, but it's actually some kind of mirrored reflection of a mirrored reflection of someone through a window across the street. The book/collection was published before 1996 and if I remember correctly, was all short story mysteries of 5 to 20 pages.

Is there a specific file in which the last.fm scrobbler caches scrobbled music which has not been uploaded? I am stuck behind a corporate firewall at work which prevents the last.fm scrobbler from uploading the tracks I've listened to. I'm not interested in bypassing the firewall at work but instead am wondering if it's possible instead to transfer a file to my home PC so that the cached tracks can be uploaded by the copy of the scrobbler running on that machine. Any thoughts appreciated.

Traditional wisdom suggests that saving money while in debt is a bad idea: you pay hundreds of times more in finance charges on money you owe than you would get in interest on money you save. Under this scenario, your "safety net", at least until you are debt-free, would be the credit lines you are clearing out. However, in a response to a Lifehacker comment I made outlining this traditional wisdom, someone replied that given the financial crisis, companies could then lower your credit limit, regardless of cause, killing your safety net. Given this, is the traditional wisdom now wrong? [more inside]

What was the commercial around 10 years ago that had a creepy old guy talk about packing off his family someplace, with the vague insinuation that they might have come to a bad end? I think it was for computer printers or something, and he had taped pictures of the family up around the house and was reveling in being alone. The dialog went something like "Sent the grandkids off camping with their aunt Carrie. Yah, yah, yaaaaaaaah." The "Yah, yah, yaaaaaah" was said in sort of a satisfied sigh and was highly imitable.

I know this is going to sound stupid, but I must know; here in Arizona, Cox Communication's has been playing a commercial featuring little blue visored characters running around doing crap.
