A non-English colleague's non-English son is off to the University of Warwick in England tomorrow! What not-obvious but super-useful UK websites will help him take full advantage of his new-found freedom (and maybe even save him some money)?

I'll be a student in the UK for at least one year. While there are many threads dedicated to unanimously deciding the process is a long, painstakingly near-impossible one, I've yet to see someone recommend a specific type of account and/or bank. (Especially since newer regulations have been implemented). If anyone knows of a FREE way of opening a UK bank account without an established residency, please share details. Thanks.

Now that I'm freshly unemployed, I'm thinking about teaching sewing lessons out of my apartment. I'm in Seattle, and my target demographic would likely be young adults on the hipster spectrum, like myself, and perhaps kids 8 and above. What do I need to consider about 1. the business side of an enterprise like that (bookkeeping, taxes, advertising, setting prices, etc.), 2. keeping things safe and pleasant while inviting basically strangers into my home. Bonus item 3. what would you want your lessons to be like if you were my student?

I’m a student and it’s tax time. I work for my school (work study) and to help make ends meet I do consulting work (web programming) for a few reputable clients (meaning they don’t pay under the table). The problem with consulting work is that I get hammered come tax time. The 1040s are unforgiving.

I am mentoring a college kid who wants to be a programmer. I am detail-oriented; he does the
bare minimum required to get the job done, but he gets things done. Am I right to push him toward thinking about doing project management rather than hands-dirty techie-developer type stuff? Or is he just lazy and needing to be schooled?

It is the first day of class and the instructor does not show up. The members of the class discuss their options, and when the first person starts to leave, one of the "students" stands up and announces that she is in fact the teacher. Is this a campus legend? A scene from a sitcom? An actual demonstration?
