I bit off more than I can chew. How do I deal with a potential F?

I've been overwhelmed with personal issues and professional involvement this semester, and I completely dropped the ball in one of my classes. The term project is due in a few days, and I think I might be unable to complete it, which would mean failing. I am a good student. This has never happened to me before. How do I address this situation? Details inside. [more inside]

need help finding a school for a 15 year old Chinese girl

my associate in China wants his daughter to study in the US, learn better English, etc. She's only 15, speaks just okay English (not great).... He wants her to study here at a high school.... but i think it will have to be a private high school... and she will have to live at the school & be supervised... Can anyone help me determine what is involved ? Does she get a foreign student temporary Visa (or something like that) ? Also, he (& I) know nothing about this process.... so i think in terms of location, anything will do.... I need to provide him with choices, locations, costs, what accommodations they can offer, etc. If you need more info., please feel free to ask... one problem about my (& his) position is because we are 'ignorant' about this whole matter, we're not even positive about what the right questions are....

Graduating Mechanical Engineer career advice needed!

My son graduates with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in May and is asking for advice on the most efficient method of finding a full-time engineering job. He wants to work for an employer where good product design is valued, and where new engineers are supported while they learn the ropes. He thinks grad school in Industrial Design is in his future, but he'd like to gain work experience and emerge from the cocoon of full-time college. He's not picky about location and would relocate nearly anywhere for the right opportunity. I've heard that engineering is one of those lucky-ticket grads, but the trick is finding a job you'll actually like! He's got a solidly good GPA and good recommendations - but he's in a small ME program at a highly rated school specializing in a different engineering specialty, and most of the employers are seeking graduates of this other engineering discipline. How much is too much Grad student loan debt? Boston vs UIC Public Health

So I have a question. I am a MPH student and I have found my ideal school. It has awesome faculty who seem really passionate about their work and are focused on helping students succeed. The career services department is also very strong. I want to attend this school because I feel like the professors care, and that they will help me get a really great job after graduation and that career services will also help me leverage my new skill set into a good paying job. I cannot express how great everyone at the school has been to me thus far. I have felt not only welcomed, but that they really want me to attend the school and program. The problem is that this is a private school and VERY expensive. [more inside]

Notify potential employer about (potential) unavailability?

I have an interview this week for a casual job in a field relevant to my career. I told them I would be available on weekends, then full-time during the summer break. This was before I managed to submit a grant application for a project that would also be over summer break. I have since received an email that my project application was unsuccessful, but that the university committee would try to get me funding for it anyway. (This has worked in previous years, but there's no guarantee it'll happen this year.) Do I tell my interviewers about the potential clash? [more inside]

Cheap way to stay in Tokyo for a few months? (internship)

I just got news that I got an internship at an architectural office (altough I just graduated as a a graphic designer) in Tokyo, which is crazy exciting. However, they can't offer any compensation (small studio) so unless I find another job next to this, I need some really cheap solutions. I just sent an email to the studio, asking them for assistance, but figured meta could help. My plan is to stay for 2-3 months. I saved up some money from side jobs, and don't mind spending it on this experience, but the less it makes a dent the better. My only idea so far was to work as some kind of au pair (I speak English, German, Dutch and Croatian fluently, I'm good with kids, but I am a guy, which I guess is not too popular a gender for babysitting), in exchange for a room. Any ideas? Also, some place where I could look for a small job on the side (preferably something where I could use my design skills, but don't mind a day job)? Also, how much can I expect to spend monthly if I'm, technically, still on a student budget? Thank a lot!

Consolidate debt with Stafford loan?

I am a "mature" student, studying at a university part time while working full time. I just learned that I qualify for a Stafford loan of about $7400. I don't need the loan to pay for classes because of my work income, but it occurred to me that I could take the loan, use it to pay off credit card debt I carry at a rate of interest more than 5 points higher than the Stafford loan rate, and then pay the Stafford loan off early. Essentially, debt consolidation using this federal loan. My questions: is this kosher? Is it wise? What I might not be thinknig about.

Graduation gift for close friend/older student?

One of my best friends is graduating soon from a MSN program. He is already well established in his career, but he took an opportunity to continue his education. He has decided to walk at the ceremony. The ceremony is out of town, and requires flying, not within driving distance. Because we love him and want to show our support, me and my family were planning on going to the ceremony, but the cost of the trip and the time off work is not really doable. Even if I went by myself, it is pretty expensive, so travel has been pretty much ruled out. We would like to get him a gift that would be meaningful and personal, since we can't be there to cheer him on. We thought about a small party, but that seems a little cheesy and routine. We would really like to do something special. Any ideas?

Tutoring student with likely neuro problem isn't getting help. Course of action?

I have been tutoring a teenage student for several months and have observed some unusual things, some of them quite worrying. His parents asked me to help him get his online classwork done (he's in a full-time online high school). He had done next to no work on his own, but it seemed he was capable enough, especially with his math assignments, although he needed a lot of prompting and hand-holding for written work. However, he seemed to have trouble walking (odd gait, sometimes crashes into walls) and couldn't type or write very well (holds a pen very awkwardly, very poor handwriting, types with one finger and literally can't strike two keys at the same time). More worryingly, he can't seem to concentrate and often just stares off into space with his eyelids drooping. This problem seems to be getting worse, and on a recent day he told me he needed to "keep [his] brain absolutely empty to get rid of [his] tiredness." I get the impression his vision may be deteriorating too; he seems to have trouble reading text on his computer screen now, which I had not noticed until recently. [more inside]

finding good student violins

My daughter has been taking violin lessons for about 5 years now. Her current violin was a beginner/student violin we bought from a music rental company in the northeast. Her instructor has recommended that we need to get a better violin for her, as she is progressing and is reaching the limits of this violin. Living in Maine, there aren't that many local outlets for reasonably priced/good quality student violins, so there are few options other than the internet. Please help me narrow down my choices.
