Personal financial help for student loans and taxes?

I need some financial planning / loan help. I graduated from grad school a year ago, and I'm getting my life together. I'm doing well professionally, juggling freelance gigs -- this doesn't necessarily mean I'm paid well, but I'm happy and fulfilled with what I'm doing. But my personal finances are a total wreck, and I need a professional to help. Who should I be looking for? [more inside]

Consolidate debt with Stafford loan?

I am a "mature" student, studying at a university part time while working full time. I just learned that I qualify for a Stafford loan of about $7400. I don't need the loan to pay for classes because of my work income, but it occurred to me that I could take the loan, use it to pay off credit card debt I carry at a rate of interest more than 5 points higher than the Stafford loan rate, and then pay the Stafford loan off early. Essentially, debt consolidation using this federal loan. My questions: is this kosher? Is it wise? What I might not be thinknig about.

Common Law, Taxes and Immigration in Canada without SIN

My common-law partner and I are in the process of filing forms for her sponsorship of me to receive permanent resident status in Canada. She changed her marital status to common-law on her most recent tax forms (we have been living together since 2009). She is now being audited by Revenue Canada, since this reflects a change from her last tax return and how her GST/HST refunds are calculated. [more inside]

I made an error in bank's favor.

I accidentally paid Sallie Mae FOUR months’ worth of federal student loans, which totals an amount I can’t possibly afford. I asked my bank to place a stop order on the electronic payments but there’s a possibility the transactions may still go through, before the stop order is processed (3 business days). What can I do to recover my money now, or in the event that the transactions indeed go through? [more inside]

How can a student avoid paying high taxes?

I’m a student and it’s tax time. I work for my school (work study) and to help make ends meet I do consulting work (web programming) for a few reputable clients (meaning they don’t pay under the table). The problem with consulting work is that I get hammered come tax time. The 1040s are unforgiving. [more inside]

repairing a credit report

I'm in college in the U.S., and have a few state student loans. They were under a forebearance that I once requested, which ended four months ago. I didn't realize this, and ignored the mail that was sent about it because I thought it was the usual mail they send me about how I have a loan and ads for consolidation. I just recently got this fixed and the forebearance backdated so it will have another year from when it ended. But I now have two 60-day late marks on my otherwise good credit report. Anything I can do to get rid of them?
