1.85% on 45k student loan - just pay the minimum?

So, I'm selling my house and will have some extra cash, finally. I have a consolidated student loan that after years of steady payments, has come down to a very low 1.85% interest rate. Given the current economic conditions, and an intense desire to have my money work hard for me after years of being in the doldrums, should I up the payment and try to save a tiny bit on interest? Or would it be better to stuff my IRA, or put money into a no-load fund or index? [more inside]

Consolidate debt with Stafford loan?

I am a "mature" student, studying at a university part time while working full time. I just learned that I qualify for a Stafford loan of about $7400. I don't need the loan to pay for classes because of my work income, but it occurred to me that I could take the loan, use it to pay off credit card debt I carry at a rate of interest more than 5 points higher than the Stafford loan rate, and then pay the Stafford loan off early. Essentially, debt consolidation using this federal loan. My questions: is this kosher? Is it wise? What I might not be thinknig about.

Student looking to settle debts so he can study abroad

I am a US citizen enrolled in a California State University and am signed up to spend the next year studying abroad in Europe. Before this happens I need to settle about $10,000 worth of debts and deal with a car payment. The foreign university needs me to show a bank balance of about $15000 to cover expenses for the year and I am wondering what kind of student loan options are available to settle debts and show proof. Failed to file a 1099-C . . Now what?

I just noticed that my student loan lender posted $230 of reportable income (in 2007) to my account - something about a 1099-C form. I didn't report this on my 2007 taxes - should I be worried? Is there a way to correct it? [more inside]

Please help me better understand repaying my student loans.

In 1997, I started making student loan payments, five months after graduating from graduate school. Shortly there after, in a sudden moment of sheer, blinding stupidity, I consolidated my loans, reducing my monthly payment and doubling the term of my loan. I do not want to make payments for 10 more years, however, I cannot figure out how to calculate the money I would save py doubling my payments this November. [more inside]

Student loan interest deduction

I recently found out that when filing my tax returns I can deduct interest paid on my student loans. My question is if I have to file my request for a deduction the same year I pay the interest, or can I wait a couple years to actually take the deduction? Here's the twister: I'm a dependent. Can I make interest payments now and deduct them from my taxes a few years down the road when I'm an independent. Does being a dependent bar me from currently taking a deduction? Thank you...I really appreciate any help.
