I've always wanted to try an eyewear-based
mind machine, but the number of options are dizzying, and it's not clear what's best. There's closed-eye, open-eye, different LEDs, and options go from $25 kits to being quite pricy. I'm aware of
this previous AskMe, but it's quite old. If you've used mind machines recently, what's the lay of the land? Also, is there somewhere I could go in the Bay Area to try them out?

So years and years and years ago at some hippie festival or other there was a guy hawking these goggle things. The gimmick was this: you'd close your eyes, look towards the sun or other bright light, and blow into a little tube that would spin fans built into the eyepieces which caused a strobe effect which was had a surprisingly psychedelic effect.
Anybody else remember these? Do they still exist? What are they called? Are they for sale anywhere online? Relevant search terms have been taken over by a pricey Nike product which is not at all what I'm looking for.

What's the name of the bizarre effect that caused a few helicopter crashes where the light of the sun is strobed by the blades causing the pilot to have some kind of seizure? I've been Googling like mad and I can't find anything, but I'm sure it has a name!

The Hancock building in Chicago has two different tower lighting systems. During the night the antenna structures have red lights to warn away aircraft. During the day the towers have strobes. Since I was a kid the towers always had red lights. Why did they make the change? It seems like two different systems would need twice as much maintenance.
