Off the rails?

Please help me convince my 19 year old niece that she shouldn't drop out of her upcoming professional course to become a stripper. My niece is the middle of three sisters. Their mother, my former sister in law, is a drug addict and has seen the girls rarely in the last seven years, when they moved into my mother's house with their father. Middle niece seems to have been doing well-- she moved out, got a waitressing job, graduated from a high school equivalency program. But now, weeks before she is going to start an (10K and 10 month, 3 day a week) hair/nail aesthetics program, she wants to put it off for a year (though she won't have funding for it then) and strip instead. (Data point: she's been asking to do the program for a couple of years and was thrilled when she registered, seemed to be excited since.) She lost her waitressing job a few weeks back, and has declared that she will instead be a stripper, that she has been in touch with an agency, etc. Yes, we know it's her life, but her grandmother is spending a lot of money on her course, and has offered her a room in her house if she has trouble paying the rent.

Family, especially her oldest sister, who has done everything she can to help the younger girls, is beside itself. I'm hoping to gather arguments as to why my niece should at the very least wait for a year before making this kind of decision. I'm not anti-stripping or sex work, this isn't a matter of religion of cultural conservatism, but the conviction that with my niece's history-- depression, anxiety, meds, etc.-- this would be a terrible choice for her. Any advice gratefully received.

You can't be President - you took a nude photo 10 years ago! So you're a bad person!

Does doing anything sex-industry-related (from taking a nude photo to actually working as a prostitute or exotic dancer) actually damn you from ever living a successful life in another area? Has anyone ever managed to be known and respected in their field without falling into "OMG SHE POSED NUDE" controversy? I've noticed lately that no matter how successful or respected someone is in their field, if they've dabbled in something vaguely "sexually deviant" in the past, it comes back to haunt them and suddenly their respect level goes down (for example, Heather Mills or Vanessa Hudgens). Often it's something as innocuous as an old nude photo taken years before they were famous.

I personally find this a bit disturbing as it implies that nudity/sexuality is something terrible and disgusting, and since it affects women more, I find this rather misogynistic. However, I would like to know if anyone has ever managed to beat this societal expectation by not being "tarnished" by past sexual activity.

All those people that pose for artsy nude photos (or heck, even porn) - is it possible for them to get a more respected (by society) career or life without those old photos haunting them? I know of people who supported themselves through grad/law school by stripping, but does their past strip club job affect their future career negatively?

I'm sure that people who have worked in the sex industry in the past can (and do) move on to careers and lifestyles that are more society-supported (in a sense). This isn't a question of "are strippers really smart enough to study law". I'm wondering more about the societal impact - whether any of their work now would be tarnished by their past work.

(I'm also curious because I've been thinking about getting some artsy semi-nude or nude photos for personal reasons, or even getting involved in art projects that involve some level of nudity - but my family is somewhat in the public eye locally and we come from a conservative society, so I dread the idea that my dad could be knocked off his job or that all my activism work becomes useless because of one photo someone dug up from years ago. People have dug up old comments about my financial situation to use against me, so this is very possible.)

Help me hire a stripper for my friend's bachelorette party.

Stripping class for a bachelorette party in DC. Is there such a thing? How would I arrange it? I was thinking - and so was the bride - that a fun pre-party (before hitting some bars) event at her bachelorette party would be to hire a female stripper who could give the group some basic lessons on doing a fun, sexy striptease for our men. In my mind, it would be pretty tame and we would keep our clothes on, we would just learn a few, um, tricks. Is there such a concept? Where would I find such a thing? It has to be DC.

Why won't the paint strip off my hardwood floor in one particular area?

Why won't the paint strip off my hardwood floor in one particular area? Before - After I'm using Bix Stripper, which is your basic stinky multi-purpose stripping agent. It works great except for one part the room. Any ideas why that is?

The floor is painted gray with random white globs of what looks like spackle. Someone did a half-assed job doing whatever it was they were doing when they decided to paint the floors, since it isn't uniform anywhere.

Anyway, there is no visible or textural difference between the spots that strip and the spot that won't, in terms of the paint. It does appear that the wood in the non-stripping portion is a bit drier and more brittle and liable to peel than in the rest of the room.

Any ideas why it isn't working? Am I going to just have to suck it up and sand the sumbitch? What other options are available to me?

Help me strip my DVD

Is there a relatively easy way (on a Mac or PC) to strip the audio from a DVD for the purposes of creating an MP3 file (or files) that can be listened to on my iPod? One large file would be okay but being able to break it up would be better.

How can I get an audiobook bought from Audible to play on my iriver H10?

How can I get an audiobook bought from Audible to play on my iriver H10? I know I should have checked beforehand, but they support all kinds of obscure players, so I just assumed mine would be ok as it's a fairly 'mainstream' device.

The downloaded file's extension is .aa, is there any way to get it on to the iriver without messing about with DRM stripping?

I suspect not, so if the only way is to strip the DRM then what program would do it? A quick googling reveals this issue to be a real minefield, and any programs I can find have long since ceased to have any real functionality.

If anyone can help but wants to keep it 'on the down low' then let me know and I'll make myself emailable.

Thanks in advance =)
