Shake-ups happening at work. Suggestions on how to handle it?

I work as a copywriter at an university in D.C. Lately, things has been piling up at this job with a series of events, and really starting to get to be too much. I'm not exactly sure how to proceed. [more inside]

Best job I’ve ever hated

My job is, by most objective standards, terrific. I work from home (which I like); have flexible hours; overtime is okay’d whenever requested; boss likes me and thinks I’m brilliant. And the pay is more than I’ve ever made in my life (which puts me at just under the low end of middle-class income). Yay. What’s not good: the work I do, which includes an increasing number of tasks I dislike intensely – enough that I’ve thought not only, “I’d rather work with raw sewage than do this,” but “hey, I wonder if that guy I used to know who worked at the sewage plant still works there? Nah, they probably don’t pay this well for untrained labor. (Could I get trained?)” [more inside]

How do you prevent headaches after work?

My job involves a lot of public speaking, meetings, and collaboration with colleagues, and I often find that after work I have a headache. I say after work because I either do not have the pain while working or do not notice it while working. I am guessing that these must be cause by tension or stress, but how should I go about preventing them? Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

How to stop feeling overwhelmed at work so I can get things done?

I love my job. I really do. But it involves a constant chaotic frenzy of emails, phone calls, people stopping by my office with questions that are sometimes quick and sometimes involved, meetings (both in and out of the office), presentations, and paperwork. I get overwhelmed with the volume and variety of tasks and feel paralyzed. How do I overcome this? [more inside]

Coping strategies to reduce/eliminate negative thoughts about my boss

I need help to stop hating my boss. I don't think that my boss is a bad person. I do think they are a terrible leader and that their actions are directly impeding both my ability to be effective in my role and to advance my career along the path I have been (wildly successfully) on. I also think that they, consciously or subconsciously, are working to sabotage me, or at the least smother me with power-plays and microaggressions to "keep me in my place" and under their control. How can I quick switch into 'vacation mode'?

My life is currently a pretty long commute to and from work bookended by childcare and cooking meals and cleaning up. That's pretty much all I do everyday. Sometimes I swim. I have a long weekend coming up and then, later this month, a camping trip planned. However, I find that it takes me so long to decompress that I don't begin to enjoy myself until the "break" is almost over. What are your tips for quickly switching into 'vacation mode'?

Should I quit my temp job or am I just being fussy?

Last week, after 5 months of unemployment and desperation I managed to get a minimum wage temp job through an agency. On my first day I was incredibly excited to have finally found a job, but quickly realised that I hate it. It's a data entry position, inputting handwritten inventory data into a database. Basically the job is incredibly tedious, there is no variety, I'm doing exactly the same repetitive task for 7.5 hours a day. I'm basically working by myself in an office with other people and can't really talk to anyone because it distracts me. I can't really leave to take a break because the office door is locked and someone has to let me in every time. They are nice to me though and tell me to take regular breaks but there is nowhere to go. [more inside]

If I could just care less about my work, I'd do a better job.

I'm the kind of person who gets worried enough they'll do their work not well, or make a mistake, that they end up either not starting or working too slowly and filled with dread. Last week, I had to work late on a project. I had two beers in the process, found I cared less about the anxiety and dread and perfectionism, and just did a better, less stressful job. I want to do this without drinking. [more inside]

what kind of therapy or practice will help my work stress?

My new job is really stressful. The tools we use are slow, buggy, and unreliable; while the pace is frantic and the volume of the work is extremely high. During the day, my stress levels often rise to the point where I'm holding my breath and my heart is pounding, even though I'm just sitting there -- in fact, I'm often sitting there for hours at a time, because there's so much to do, I can't even get up and take a stretching break to calm down. Toys and objects to deal with physical stress.

So there is the stress ball. That one I know. Does anyone have any other ideas for dealing with nervous energy from stress and anxiety in the office that won't bother people around you so much (esp those moments when I can't just go for a long walk or to the gym, etc). It’s a fairly routine problem for me that even after the stressor is long gone, the nervous energy sticks around. I don't so much need the 'take a deep breath' or 'think positive' type of thing, I might not even be actively thinking or worrying about anything; and I already have a good doc for the long term aspects. Just looking for some ideas about the tactile and physical side of this thing, which tends to stick around for a while and can be pretty uncomfortable.
