My husband has recently started using the weight machines at the Y. He wants to build strength and muscle mass as quickly as possible, while hopefully also losing some fat. What is the best strategy if we assume that for the time being, he is not going to switch to free weights?

This $20/month gym looks awesome... but it doesn't have barbells, so I can't do StrongLifts 5x5. Should I go back to my old gym, or do you guys have an alternative structured dumbbell/machine-based/bodyweight strength training program? Or a better gym suggestion in downtown Manhattan?

Becoming stronger while dieting: is it possible?
My main focus right now is losing weight. I want to lose about 8-10 kilos of tummy fat, have already lost two of them by dieting and doing cardio. I also want to gain strength in my upper body but after five strength training sessions I have a feeling I am doing something wrong or it just might not be possible on the amount of food I am taking in right now.

I'm a 35 yr old female, 5'6", 120lbs, in good general shape (walk loads, work out) who has never been able to achieve a single-push up. It's a key move to many of the workouts I want to do, but most strength-building programs assume that even the weakest can do at least one. What should I do?
