Running to weights: Help me with my special snowflake workout program?

I’m a longtime triathlete who’s been asked to stop doing bouncy, ballistic-type activities for awhile, and no exercise on my back. I can ride a little and I can swim a little, but I can’t run, which is my primary passion. I figure I should probably start weightlifting more anyway, since I’m over 40 and need to worry about losing muscle mass. [more inside]

Bicep tendinitis and strength training

After about 12 weeks of working out (mostly dumb bells, cables and bands), I've developed bicep tendinitis (I think) that mostly hurts in my elbow. I'm taking ibuprofen, icing it, and resting it as much as possible but I don't know when I should worry and when I should suck it up. [more inside]

How often can I work out? (Strength training)

Currently I'm seeing a trainer twice a week for an hour each time, and working out on my own one other day. It is exclusively strength training, mostly involving resistance bands, dumbbells, cables, and leg extensions. I recover extremely quickly - he works me to exhaustion but I am nearly fully recovered in a few hours and I'm rarely sore the next morning. Can/should I work out every day? [more inside]

Women's strength training: No barbells, no plyometrics

What are the best power/speed-enhancing strength training moves I can do that a) are not plyometric and b) don't require barbells (as opposed to dumbbells)? I KNOW I KNOW. It's like asking "How do I not get spaghetti sauce all over my face and clothes if I eat it blind-folded with my hands tied behind my back?" As always, snowflakes. [more inside]

Good, positive exercise DVDs for teens and children?

I work at a psychiatric hospital, on the child and adolescent service. Our kids don't have a lot of opportunity for exercise, which is really not good, given how effective exercise can be for mood regulation, self-confidence, etc. I'd like to find some good exercise DVDs that they can use when they have unstructured time on the unit. I'd like them to be as positive as possible-- not a lot of "burn that flab away" or "let's sculpt sexy butts." [more inside]

Strength Training for the Bendy

Are you aware of any strength-training resources geared towards people with hypermobility syndromes? If you are yourself a hypermobile person who lifts weights or does any other type of strength training, do you have insights to share? I have joint hypermobility issues throughout my body which make me very prone to tendinitis, sprains, tenosynovitis and other injuries. In the past, when I have undertaken fairly conservative strength training programs under the supervision of experienced, qualified personal trainers, I have always injured myself. [more inside]

Resources/training plans to balance strength training and cardio?

I'm looking at starting a beginner strength training program in a few week's time. But I've also taken up running in the past year, and don't want to regress on that front while I'm concentrating on the weights. I know I need to build in proper rest if I want to see improvements strength-wise, and I'm trying to figure out how to balance all this stuff. Any pointers/resources that tell you how to build a workout plan that can accommodate both goals and not leave me exhausted? [more inside]

Will home gym equipment help my reduce-my-paunch-goal?

I feel terrible because of my paunch. I am otherwise mostly fit. I try to do some cardio, some light jogging, cycling on a roller etc. I am too self conscious to go to a gym or go to a trainer. Besides, I live in the middle of nowhere and don't really have any good gyms or so nearby. Are stuff like this (Thane Total Flex Home Gym) useful? [more inside]

Exercise was never my “thing”, but now I need to make it my “thing”. I’m pushing 50 years old, and my sedentary lifestyle is taking its toll in the form of borderline-high blood pressure, various aches & pains, and a susceptibility to becoming easily tired. [more inside]

Strength training options

I want to improve my endurance exercise by strength training. According to research I should go for a high weight very low rep program. I know there are a few commonly recommended books for that like Starting Strength and The New Rules of Lifting (for Women). I wonder if there is a way to do this without going to a gym or buying expensive equipment, and without following a whole comprehensive program that assumes that weight lifting will be the focus of my life. Experiences of females that started weightlifting?

I switched from doing cardio to lifting weights at the gym, mainly because I LOVE IT. However, despite every website telling me that, as a woman, I won't get "big and bulky," I think I might be. I've gone up 1-2 clothing sizes, my butt has exploded, jackets now seem narrow in the chest ... It would be one thing if, standing nude in the mirror, I saw a 6-pack staring back at me, but I don't. It doesn't "look" like I've lost much body fat at all (but I can definitely tell that I've gained muscle - I've got a bicep! For the first time ever!). So, my question: will one day my muscle mass get large enough that my metabolism will rev up and my body fat will melt away? What are other ladies' experiences with beginning weight training and that effect on their body? (and I mean REAL weight training - bench presses of over 100 lbs, for instance - not lifting a 5 lb weight)
