Attempting to create an online "television" for a massive online course that would rotate through content created by the course participants. Similar idea to betamaxmas but will probably include static visual content like Flickr feeds as well. Hoping to not have to build this completely from scratch but coming up blank on all searches. Read on for the dirty details [more inside]
Netflix streaming movies - What kind of load should I expect on my service (in gb) for an average movie? I have Comcast and have a pretty healthy limit, but I don't want to start pushing it.
How can I stream DVDs from my Synology NAS to my TV? I want to keep the extras, so I don't want to just rip it to avi or anything. I assume I need a device that will browse the NAS and mount the DVD and play it, but every streaming device I've found seems to just play simple videos. Commentary is half the value in any DVD, so if it isn't possible to do this I'd need to have some way to rip the DVD to a video file using the audio from the commentary.
I need to record one of these broadcast feeds tomorrow morning (PDF link). What's the best way to go about this? I'm on a Mac, and I won't be home when it begins. How much hard drive space should I have available?

I have long held a fantastic dream of what I want my home theater setup to be. I've tried several times, in several different ways, to realize this dream - but there is always something. There's always something that doesn't work right - that makes my final implementation lacking in some fundamental way. I'm starting to give up hope. So - I'll tell you what I want and what I've tried - and I want you to tell me if there's another way. I can't be alone here. [more inside]

What's the easiest/cheapest way to set up a home surveillance camera that will notify me and stream video for remote viewing/recording if somebody enters my home while I'm gone?
What is the easiest, cheapest, most effective way for me to set up a single motion-triggered surveillance camera at home to verify whether I have a creepy situation going on while I'm gone? If triggered, I want it to alert me remotely, stream video for remote live viewing, and ideally record to the cloud rather than locally for later viewing. I'd like an easy web/desktop interface to control it all. Have you tried one of those kits from X10 for this and did it work well for you? [more inside]
I've just successfully installed Win7 onto an older but servicable PC in order to use it as a streaming media player in another room. Problem is that although it can see all of the shared files, folders and drives on my main machine it keeps telling me I don't have the correct permissions whenever I click on them - but permissions are set to 'Everyone' and another machine (a netbook) I do the same thing with can see and play everything perfectly... can anyone offer any help or suggestions please, I'm at my wit's end! Thanks in advance!

Using your smartphone, can you listen to online live radio while walking around your city? I'm trying to do this (with my iPhone, in Paris) and it only works if I stay in one place; if I move more than about 500m, it usually disconnects. I'm curious to know if others have the same experience so that I can determine if it's my carrier, the phone, the city, or just general limitations of 3G GSM networks. (Note: I'm not talking about Pandora or Spotify; I'm referring specifically to live radio streams which can't buffer minutes ahead). [more inside]

At my company, we recently started recording our internal talks/seminars. I want to set it up so that people can watch these later directly through their web browser. So, basically, looking for self-hosted video streaming server software (kind of like a YouTube/Vimeo from inside the firewall). Are there free alternatives to Adobe Flash Media Server? I'm currently looking at Apache with the h264 Streaming Module and JW Player. But is there anything that just works seamlessly? Copy an .MP4 file to a directory, give it a name in a form and a URL is generated for you?
I want to listen to the music on my PC on my stereo system but also portably around the house. What's the best way of doing this? [more inside]
I have a CentOS server with a directory of some MP3s. What is the easiest way to have a radio stream setup so I can listen to them at work or on my phone?
