There was a huge lightning storm this morning, in the middle of it my power went out.
All the breakers on my boat are on, all e breakers on the power bollard are on.
The odd thing is that the bollard has power to the meters and register 5v on the ac setting of my multimeter across live and earth.
Also the RCD buttons trip out the breakers. This suggests that it has power. But nothings coming out.
Any ideas for
a) How come it has some power but no output
b) Is there anything I can do.
My electrical skills = I own a nice multimeter
My fear of zappy death = relatively high [more inside]

Hi I am house sitting and Nemo is bearing down on us. I have a oil furnace in the basement. If the power goes out, then comes back, or I use the generator, are there any specific steps I need to take with the furnace?
What about water valves, etc?

I realized during Sandy that 1) we don't own any sort of radio; 2) I don't have a UPS for my desktop Mac; and 3) there are surely other things/tools/resources we probably should buy now to prepare for the next big storm. Can you make any recommendations? [more inside]

It looks like we are going to have a tropical storm pass by where I live tomorrow. From my experience this means a couple of days without electricity. Could you suggest activities that will help keep my five year old son (and wife and mother-in-law and myself) engaged if there is going to be no television, internet, kindergarten, and lights? Are there any mythological creatures or figures in Russian folklore that are particularly associated with storms, wind or bad weather? Are there any particular stories that expand on what Wikipedia has to say

Four days ago there was a storm. Standing ankle deep in water which had flooded up to my front door step, I stuck my metal key into my apparently 100% metal door and ended up sort of electrocuting myself, feeling a tingle and shock going up my arm. Since then I've had this weird tingling sensation in my right hand and arm up to my elbow... just now I tried to hold up a can of soda my fingers and hand tremble. Now what? [more inside]

If I have an appliance that has a DC motor, should I unplug it during a storm if it's not on a surge protector? Why?

Where did the mystery water come from? There were huge storms in the Twin Cities tonight. We returned home to find a puddle of water surrounding the furnace, which is located in the middle of the basement. There is no evidence of any water near the walls, or any leak from above. Where could this water have come from? [more inside]

Considering a new phone and because of a need for reliable rural service and an attractive family plan shared with our extended family, we're considering Verizon and either the Dare or the Storm. The difference in data plans is $20—$30 for the Storm, $10 for the Dare. Is the Storm and the Blackberry service worth it? Anyone with a Dare or a Storm have regrets or accolades?

power surge damage: last night something went wacko on my neighborhood power grid, and stuff started popping and blowing up and burning (in 6-8 other houses as well). We shut off all of the breakers as quick as we could, but when we woke up this morning lots of stuff was destroyed. Will anyone pay for the damage? [MI] [more inside]

The son of Hurricane Ivan ?
. Apparently the forces which generated Ivan respawned a tropical storm near Texas. To mefi meteoreologist, is this a first time event or there's some precedent ?
