I have a portable usb hard drive that I use for keeping all my documents / backups on. Windows seems to love using this drive for everything, for example I am installing IE7 from windows update, and it is using the drive to hold all the temporary files during the install. Because of this the drive is always in use and I can never eject it. [more inside]
Having settled on Dropbox as a way to backup files, how do I save files to my computer AND to My Dropbox. All I see is how to MOVE the file - I want to have it in both locations - my computer and Dropbox but don't see a choice on the s/w to make that happen.
I have an external usb drive running off my Windows 7 computer. It keeps switching back to Read-Only, so when I try to send files to it, it merely appends a file and adds a number to its name, instead of re-writing the entire file. I've tried to change it back, but it does not stay changed. The minute I refresh the page, the read-only status comes back! Is there some setting I'm missing? Is there something in Windows 7 that's causing this to happen?
How can I efficiently and quickly find the files I need? Both short term and long term solutions needed. [more inside]

I can't believe this is so hard to find. I have this Expedit bookcase from Ikea. I bought some cubes from Ikea to fit on the shelves, but not enough. I bought 7, I need 5 more. I don't want to buy anymore from Ikea but I can't find this type of storage anywhere else in the UK! More specs inside. [more inside]

Looking for nice travel CD cases? My mom would like to take some CDs in the car with her. She's terribly hard to buy gifts for. So...if I could spend some dough on a nice CD case, I'd be happy to do it. So far, all I can find is regular, sorta lousy quality ones. Does anyone have any online sources for nicer-than-usual cases?
I'm looking for inspiration on how to reduce computer clutter. I run a lot of machines and make them do a lot of cool things, but in a 92sqm apartment where we're also trying to manage massive DVD, magazine, and book libraries, and where my previous work station (which was never all that orderly) has been conquered by my girlfriend's rampaging makeup and sewing stuff, it ain't easy. I want to compartmentalize, organize, and speed up the process of accessing my stuff. Ideas? [more inside]

Summer Fur Coat Storage: Is this a Fur Industry scam or a way to extend the life of your coat? (animal activists, please don't go whacky on me, I'm a vegetarian but I live in Chicago and I'm sorry, down jackets are just not as warm nor can you wear a down jacket to a wedding, the opera, etc). Every summer I mull over whether or not to have my coat and jacket cleaned and stored--obviously the fur industry promotes this, but does it REALLY prolong the life of the garment (or does it just increase the income of the fur store)?

What's the best way to store apples for the long term? I've got a serious honeycrisp apple addiction going and I want to keep eating them when they're out of season. Supposedly they keep for 3-4 months in the fridge. Is this true? Can I freeze apples and thaw them later? Will freezing destroy the texture or flavor?

Searching for the perfect, wall mounted bookshelves: As I live in San Francisco, I'd like some books shelves that are adjustable and readily anchored to the wall. The Treku Bookcase from DWR is perfect, but (as with much from DWR) a bit too expensive. Any other suggestions? [more inside]

I'll be getting off the amtrak in Seattle on Thursday with a bicycle, a cumbersome backpack, and a laptop bag. I have a three person Mac OS X office where we need to have remote access to about 4GB of files. I have looked around extensively for a solution and so far have not found an acceptable one. We have tried to use Back to my Mac and Apple Remote Desktop but the other two users are not that technically adept and it seem too complicated for them. Out problem is further complicated by the fact that we sometimes access the same files, so we can have version problems as well. Back to my Mac has never worked period. Could I use Amazon S3 storage? And manage with Subversion or Git? Are there reasonable clients for Subversion and Git. Drobo with network card seem over the top and too costly. Having the files on the cloud would be a perfect solution, however a local solution that could be accessed from anywhere will work as well. To further complicate we are thinking of having one person access via PC.

I'm looking for tips on organizing personal medical records and information, assuming a chronic or complicated health problem. Things like X-rays and MRI discs, blood test results, prescriptions, notes taken during appointments with the doctor, notes made on non-appointment days about symptoms, medical history, insurance policies and bills, therapies tried and discontinued... what are great ways to keep it all organized, for ease of use (and consistent record-keeping) both for the patient and his care partners?
