We just had a home energy audit performed on our house, and are preparing to pull the trigger on several thousand dollars' worth of insulating, weather stripping, leak sealing, etc. We're trying to maximize the amount of rebate money we can receive, either through local or federal tax credits, or through stimulus money, NYSERDA or some other source. We're having trouble finding out what exactly is available for the type of work we're having done as NY State homeowners. Any suggestions? Note: we're not interested in low-interest loans or other financing-based incentives.

Today was the first day the stimulus withholding showed up in my paycheck. I can't tell: is this additional $13 just a change in withholding, or is my annual income tax actually reduced by $400? If it's just another bullshit rebate, I do not want this money. Please advise. [more inside]

The American Recovery & Reinvestment Act helps unemployed people with their COBRA payments in two ways: it subsidizes 65% of their payments, and because this lower price makes it affordable for many who couldn't before, it allows people who didn't elect for COBRA the first time a second chance to elect for coverage. I was laid off on October 24, and I did elect for coverage on January 28. But I haven't paid yet. The grace period for payment ends in a few days, on Saturday — it has to either be paid online or postmarked by then. If I were to not pay, would I be given the same second chance as those who didn't elect the first time around — the difference being that I would have elected, but not paid? It's a substantial financial difference for me. A little bit more inside. [more inside]

Looking for Events: So the stimulus package is getting out there. Does anyone know of any events (any where in the US) that are advocating for the money for green jobs? I want to get involved and am looking for some organizations to connect with that can help me get into green collar work. Any one have any connections, ideas or heard of anything? Are there any events to get the money to local businesses, communities for green jobs? Looking to get connected! I want to know how the recovery package can reach me at a local level and I can make something happen and get involved!

How did the WSJ put together this breakdown of the stimulus bill (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act)? They cite the CBO as their source but the only CBO breakdown I can find is much less detailed. Where can I get a breakdown of the bill that lists each item in the bill individually and where all the items add up to $787.2 billion, the CBO estimate of the bill's total impact on the deficit? Thanks.

I'm a US citizen, while my wife is from Canada, and is in the US on a K3 visa while we work on getting her Green Card. The downside of this is that until she gets either that Green Card or a work permit, she can't be employed in the US.
I filed my taxes as "Married Filing Jointly," and was informed that because she has an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, rather than a Social Security Number, I would not be getting my "Economic Stimulus (Bush Bribe)" check. Does anyone understand the rationale here? Why does her status preclude my receiving my payment?
