Replace radio with aux-in only?

My car radio was stolen last night, and I'd like to turn this tragedy into something awesome. I've always wanted to have a custom setup that consisted only of a volume knob and an aux in. I don't know how to design circutry, but I can follow instructions. What do I need to do to make this work? [more inside]

Help me justify a $300 CD player in 2014

On the occasion of moving the living room around, I'm upgrading my old, clunky stereo components with new, smaller stuff that fits better in the new cabinet. My old 5-disc CD carousel doesn't come close to fitting, so I need a replacement. We own lots of CDs but listen to them only occasionally, so a changer isn't necessary or even preferable. I was always taken with NAD components when I'd go to the stereo store with my dad as a kid, and now I'm wondering if it there's a way to justify this for $300 when a Sony DVD player that surely plays CDs just fine can be had for well under $50. Other than snob appeal, would I appreciate any aural benefit from a dedicated audio-specific CD player in my decidedly midrange set-up? (For context, speakers are Pioneer SP-BS22-LRs and the receiver is an Onkyo TX8020.)

High pitch pulse sound coming from stereo receiver

I am getting a high pitch sound coming out of stereo in a pulse that would make a dog loopy. I do not have a sophisticated setup. The stereo is plugged into the wall. Apple TV is plugged into wall and TV. Router plugged into power strip along with DVD player. I switched out all RCA plugs and speaker wire. [more inside]

How do I install an auxiliary port in my car?

I drive an '09 Nissan Versa hatchback (base model). I'm sick of burning CD's and listening to the same songs, listening to songs from my phone echoed by the cup holder, and there's far too much feedback with an FM transmitter for my iPod. What I am looking to do is simply buy a stock Nissan Versa stereo with an auxiliary plug-in. Is/are there any additional components I would need aside from the new stock stereo itself? I plan on recruiting a technologically savvy friend who can install it for me. And in case anyone is curious, I'd like to stick with a stock stereo as I'd intend to leave it in even when selling or trading in.

Tips for buying a cassette deck, in 2013, in Chicago?

I'm putting together a stereo system that only needs to be able to play cassette tapes and vinyl records, because yes I am that much of a hipster. I have my speakers and turntable, and I just picked up a 1970s receiver with integrated cassette deck...which stopped working almost immediately. How do you go about buying something with many breakable, moving parts that stopped being manufactured with any quality in the 1980s? Should I replace my receiver with just a receiver and get a standalone tape deck? Where do you even buy a standalone tape deck? [more inside]

One stereo speaker works off and on. I think it's the receiver. Any fix?

About half the time when I turn on the stereo the left channel speaker doesn't work. If I turn the balance all the way to the left on the receiver, and increase the volume sharply, the speaker comes on. Then I can lower the volume, adjust the balance, and everything works fine till I turn off the stereo. It's the same with all sound sources. [more inside]

The sound on my vintage receiver cuts out.

My dad recently gave me his mid '70s-era receiver. It's a Kenwood KR-5600 (here's a photo). I've got it up and running and it mostly sounds great to my ears, but the sound sometimes fluctuates (cutting/fading in and out) when I'm playing my turntable through it (a Toshiba SR-F770 direct drive...nothing fancy). Do I need to replace the whole radio in my car?

I have a 1995 Toyota Corolla Conquest who's factory standard radio has just died (I think). It made a slight noise last night and cut out, and is now just flashing 01:00 on the clock with no buttons responding at all. I thought maybe the fuse had blown so I checked the radio fuse, but it doesn't look to have blown (something I suspected as a time keeps flashing on the display and I thought a blown fuse wouldn't allow any electronics to work). Also the cigarette lighter still works and that is connected/part of the radio fuse. [more inside]

How to run 20 feet of 3.5mm to RCA cabling?
