Genital herpes . . . Whaaa?

I just recently learned that I have had genital herpes for 25 years. Color me stunned. What are the chances, after 20+ years of unprotected sex with my monogamous partner, that they have not contracted the virus from me? My partner has never had anything remotely related to a herpes sore on their genitals or other part of their body. At this point are they likely an asymptomatic carrier? Is the viral load so low during non-outbreak periods that they could have avoided the infection altogether? [more inside]

STD/AIDS PSA from early 90s

How worried should I be about a possible 2 year old syphilis infection?

Let's say that after my doctor's appointment this week it's found that I contracted syphilis roughly two years ago and that I'm immediately given the standard treatment. How worried should a 26 year old man in apparently good health be about the consequences of having waited so long to be treated? How likely are cognitive or cardiac complications, and to what degree is teriary or neuro- syphilis an "all or nothing" affair? The wording of googled fact-sheets and CDC briefs isn't terribly precise (lots of "may cause complications" and "can occur in some instances"). [more inside]

Is abstinence reasonable in this case?

A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with a common but non-lethal STI. Since then, I have become somewhat of a recluse and decided to be completely abstinent moving forward. I'm looking for some perspective from others to see how reasonable my decision here is. [more inside]

HPV disclosure advice

Hi, single hetero male here. YANMD, but I did correspond by email recently with my actual doctor about HPV disclosure. She told me that I do not need to disclose potential HPV exposure to any future partners. Does that sound right to the hive mind? I thought being an adult was all about having unsexy conversations about sex. More details below - [more inside]

Possible asymptomatic herpes and HPV--should I disclose?

Dude, here. 1) My ex-girlfriend of on-and-off three years had periodic oral herpes outbreaks. I've never had an outbreak. Want to kiss new girl. Do I disclose so she can make an informed decision? 2) Two ex-girlfriends in distant past had abnormal pap smears. Do I disclose? [more inside]

Non-STD causes for unusual vaginal discharge? (TMI warning).

A few days ago, I noticed an odd odor coming from my vaginal discharge in the morning. Today, it was a greenish color (kind of like snot). Dr. Google seems to think that the only explanations are STI related. I am in a long-term monogamous relationship, and there has been no infidelity to my knowledge. I will of course seek professional medical advice, but am currently traveling alone in a remote area and will not be able to call my GYN for a week. Are there any innocent explanations, or am I looking at some heartbreak in the days to come?

How soon after sex should I have STI testing done?

I (late 20s male) slept with a girl I don't know very well over the weekend. (Used protection, nothing broke or leaked...all very safe.) We talked after, and she said that the last time she was tested she was clean, but that was a while (and a couple of partners) ago. I have no reason to suspect I've acquired anything new, but I'd still like to do my due diligence and make sure I'm clean. My last test was about a year and a half after the last time I'd had sex, but I don't intend on waiting nearly that long. I know HIV takes about six months to show up, but as far as other common STIs go, how long should I wait for anything else to show up?

How to reasonably evaluate risk after a broken condom

I am a woman on hormonal birth control and in a mostly monogamous relationship with a guy. Alarmed about a piece of me that just fell off.

A few days ago I was in the shower, and I noticed a tiny lump in the front of my armpit. Initially I thought it was a zit, so I poked it with a needle. It hurt and thus it was apparently not a zit. As I examined it closer, I saw that it was more... fleshy. [more inside]

Transitive STD testing and testing for oral transmission, oh my!

I had unprotected sex and performed cunnilingus. I'm uninsured. I'm asymptomatic. Where and what type of STD testing should I look for? Also, if I test clean then what is the chance that that she too is/was clean? The primary question is where can I get a general panel of STD testing cheaply (or free) given that I am currently uninsured because I'm (hopefully temporarily) unemployed. Barring other options, how much should I expect to spend at my general doctor for the proper tests? Is that worth it given my situation below? [more inside]
