My phone service is VOIP through Comcast/Xfinity and, for the most part, I'm satisfied with it. But I keep having a recurring and troubling problem with the other person breaking up after about one hour; usually more than an hour, sometimes a little less. Can anything be done? [more inside]
I was wondering if the static shocks that a person normally gets in the winter are caused by an excess of electrons, a deficiency of electrons, or if it happens both ways but just depends on the circumstance.
My old laptop finally failed, and I want to take the hard drive home with me. The laptop is gigantic, and I don't want to lug it home on the train. I am leaving tomorrow morning. I don't have a static-resistant bag, and won't have time to get one before I leave. What's the best way to transport my unenclosed hard drive in my luggage? Assume I don't have any tin foil, paper bags, or cardboard boxes. I do have paper towels, regular towels, packing tape, plastic bags, and bubble wrap.
People I talk to on Skype claim to hear static coming from my end. I ran a test in Audacity and I could hear the static as well. The microphone I'm using is an MXL 990 and I'm using and Icicle Preamp (This thing) to connect the mic to my laptop through USB. I'm copying over any and all specs that would help. Here is the link. I've tried disabling my internal mic and that didn't work. Before I got this laptop, I was using a laptop that had XP on it and it worked fine. I did spray febreeze in the room and on the mic so that everything would smell nice (I was trying to clean up the room). I tried using both my internal mic and another USB one and they worked fine. I also tried using a different USB cord to hook up my mic to my laptop and I was told there was static. What should I do? I've been having this problem for a while now and it's starting to get on my nerves. Thanks in advanced.
I get painful static shocks to my hands where they touch the cart as I'm pushing it around at Costco. As far as I can tell this happens while wearing various kinds of shoes, although I haven't experimented rigorously. Help me devise a method to prevent this that I can realistically implement during impromptu trips to the store. [more inside]

I need to setup a internal static IP for my computer at home where I'm running Autodesk Smoke on Mac. We currently have terrible wireless by AT&T running from a motorola ngv510 DSL modem/router. Please help? I tried "just figuring it out" and managed to kill the house's internet for over an hour tonight. Anyone have any experience with this?

I need a theme for a new Wordpress site I'm making about hot springs in Japan. I have a large Bento database of over 200 location with reviews, pictures, addresses, types of baths, and so on... I've found a way to automatically turn the CSV file that Bento makes into the pages I want... I just need a template to put those pages into. Something simple and more geared to hosting static pages rather than a blog. I've spent hours searching through all of these theme websites only to get confused in the 1,000s of choices. So I'm asking you, the MiFi community, to choose for me. Thanks! [more inside]

My fiancee and I were just now woken up by the sound of a large explosion right in our bedroom. Almost like a gunshot but not quite that loud. And I think I saw a flash of light. Both seemed to come from near the ceiling by the door. I turned on one of the lights but there's no residue I can see from anything. Nothing seems to be broken in terms of lights or circuits. Was it some kind of giant static discharge? [more inside]

Why does my cellular phone cause my home stereo speakers to make strange noises? Sometimes it happens when a call is about to come in, but mostly it just happens periodically for seemingly no reason. I have an old bose acoustic wave radio serving as my PC speakers. Powered but not connected to the computer the speakers produce a gentle hissing. When plugged in (via a 3.5mm to RCA cable) I hear noisy static -- not pure white noise, far more annoying -- and an intermittent whine that changes pitch depending on what's going on in the computer. For example, if the processor is under greater than 30% load all the noises go away. This does not happen with headphones so I think it is some combination of noise in the computer circuits and the amp built into the radio. My question is how do I make it stop? [more inside]

OK this might seem really silly but I'm having a static electricity problem and it's driving me insane. I don't seem to be able to go shopping anymore without getting loud painful zaps when I touch the shelving or even tins of food or anything with a foil cover, not to mention the shopping trolley. I'm sure this would be funny if it weren't so painful. It hapens when I'm driving too as soon as I step out of the car ZAP. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm wearing, if my hair is dry or wet....the weather..nothing. It's really making life a bit miserable...Any solutions?
