I've used AskMeFi for travel advice before and it's been invaluable. This time I'm planning a road trip from Gainesville, FL to Austin, TX around Halloween to coincide with a music festival I attend each year.
I've been to the United States (NYC, San Francisco, and the Pacific Northwest) many times but never to the south – with the exception of Florida if that counts. Do you have any suggestions, places to definitely see, places to definitely avoid? More below if useful...

I need your assistance in helping identify the most physically remote areas of the lower 48 that have towns and a population. Examples might be Appalachia, northern Maine, west Texas, the Oregon desert, but specific towns, general areas, personal anecdotes, histories or even hearsay would be appreciated.

Can anyone explain to me the reason why the pay for members of the United States Congress is paid by the federal government and not their respective states? Was such a system ever considered and rejected and, if so, why? I recognize that the offices are federal, but their ties to their state is the very reason they are there. Wouldn't state legislatures want that control or were they happy to dump the costs onto the federal government? This seems like something that would have been debated very early in our history yet I can't find any info on it.
Thanks.

I'm going to take a six week vacation, and I want to tour the United States. I'm based in Los Angeles, and I have a reliable car. I am familiar with most parts of the western and southern U.S., but I've never been to New England. I want to do this late summer (say, mid-August through mid to late September, but this is flexible). How can I make the most of the trip? What are the must-sees? Must-haves for the trip? Any tips for the road?

Where would you visit in the lower 48 during the month of MARCH for a long weekend? Through an airline bungle, I have two tickets to use. The whole trip will be 4-5 days.
What events, conferences, shows, etc. are going on in MARCH that you would love to travel for? Alternatively, we could just do great "get away" spot that doesn't cost a fortune. Take me off the beaten path, folks. Show me the way.
