How does equity even work?

How to bring up the question of getting my hands on some equity in the company I work for? I work at a small (>10 employees) engineering firm contributing greatly to the intellectual property in which we trade. I get paid decently (for which I am definitely grateful) but there's never been any discussion of earning any equity... [more inside]

How to pitch myself to a startup?

I am a marketing professional - middle management in an enormous media conglomerate. I would like to shift my work environment and infrastructure completely and work for a startup that is currently staffed only with technical experts, programmers, scientists and a small sales force. How do I pitch myself to be part of a company that doesn't have any people who do what I do yet? [more inside]

New one-main-person business website: "I" or "We"?

After nearly a year of being unemployed and looking for that perfect job, I've decided instead to start my own business. It is set up as a sole proprietorship, but I will be collaborating with a bunch of fellow freelancers as their services become necessary (video editors, etc). On my website (which is set up as the name of my company), I have been using "we" to describe the work. "We have ten years of experience" "We have a specific passion for telling stories", etc. I'm not trying to fool anyone (my "about us" page basically says "this company is SoftLord, and also other awesome freelance partners"), but I'm having a difficult time figuring out the proper language to use. I've been going back and forth on this with fellow solopreneurs (yeah, I know) and there hasn't been any consensus. Is this disingenuous? Should I be using "I" instead? Snowflake inside. Automatic log in to a Mac on restart?

So, following up on my previous question: I have this Mac Mini that will drive a big data display. I wrote an AppleScript that starts up Chrome and goes to fullscreen mode, and I put that script in the startup items and it all works swell. BUT! I still need to log in for it to work. Can I set something up so that the Mac starts and runs without any user intervention at all? [more inside]

I wasn't even good at asking my dad for my allowance, for cripe's sake.

I have the reverse problem of most startups... within two years I built a solid and unique brand, with a high media profile and street cred, proven content and products, and a passionate audience of over 240,000 people and growing. But although people congratulate me daily on my success I'm literally exhausted and starving. People circle me daily wanting to "sponsor" me, but I've found most of them want to make money *off* of me, not pay me and help me grow. Fact is, I'm accepting now that I just can't do it all by myself and I don't even WANT to... but I'm a victim of my own quick success. Without a staff and resources I can't expand, grow and monetize as I *need* to in order to meet the demand. [more inside]

Equity 101 please?

I'm an 18-year-old designer looking to join a start-up, they said they are interested in giving me equity in addition to my salary. I know nothing about this. Where to start? What to negotiate for? I've heard tons of warnings about shares before but I'll be happy to hear them again. Thanks all!

How to divide up my new company?

I'm founding a startup! Yaaay! I have some friends who like my idea and want to help me. However, I have no money to pay them, so I'm guessing that I'll need to give them a piece of the action. How do you respond when the interviewer misses your phone interview?

I had a phone interview for an entry level position at a small tech startup, but the interviewer is about forty minutes late with no signs of appearing. How do I respond? Possibly relevant: When I confirmed the interview, I forgot to "Reply All" and didn't CC it to two people. Because of this, my interviewer might have missed my confirmation or something.
