How do you start a social networking site when all you have is an idea?

I have what I think is a really good idea for a social networking website, kind of along the lines of airbnb or meetup. If it was done right, I think it could be very popular. But the problem is that I have zero business knowledge and zero computer/coding/web design knowledge, and therefore I have no leverage with those I'd have to partner with. All I have is an idea. What would you consider a red flag when interviewing at a startup?

I was recently recruited for a mid-level role at a young startup (tech in development for several years; company has existed for about a year). My gut feeling about the product and the tech is that it's viable. The market is there, and I myself would use the product. This is not the case for 80% of startup products/ideas that I see. I'm not so sure how I feel about the founders or the results of the first interview. [more inside]

Searching for small web app ideas.

I'm a web developer looking to build a 'micropreneur'-style side project but am short on tangible ideas -- everyone around me works in software, and we either roll-our-own or have hundreds of web apps already targeting us. How do I become fervently dedicated to something?

Suppose you’re a 28 year old who, after spending 18 years as a shut-in, is finally able to experience things most people experience in their early teens. How do you dedicate yourself to an idea, a cause, a company, or a domain of knowledge while being incessantly hounded by the realization that there is much more to life than the object of your obsession? Proposing a partnership, what's fair?

I am working on a website which is going to be a community and blog. A friend of mine shares a similar interest, and I want to invite him to partner up because I think it will be more fun and easier to get up and running with a partner. I'd like to propose we officially create a partnership with a contact and all that so he has incentive. But I've done or/am doing the lion's share of the work, at least initially. What's a fair deal? Health insurance options for entrepreneurs?

Where can I find affordable health insurance? I'm on COBRA since striking it out on my own, but currently have not started making revenue, and am worried about options once that runs out. My current high deductible plan from UHC costs ~$213/mo ($2700 deductible) and includes EyeMed vision and dental (additional $35). I know I won't find anything this good post-COBRA but hoping there's something close? I know that since ACA has started that individuals can buy insurance off exchanges (I am in NYC, so will be more expensive, I know..). Will definitely be checking that out. Freelancer's Medical has come up in my searches. I don't think that entrepreneurs (who are not freelancers getting 1099s) qualify for Freelancer's, but checking with them. Not sure we qualify for HealthyNY for small business (individual option has been terminated post-ACA), since we are an LLC but I am the only full-time partner (the rest have day jobs). Are there other options I'm not aware of? Thanks for any help!

Can I stop my former startup co-founder from stealing my idea?

So I had this idea for a tech startup. I found somebody that I thought could help me make it real. We developed a pitch for investors. Help my computer take me beyond the blue start-up screen

I have a HP Elitebook 8530p and recently after I have logged on it just sits there with a blue, slightly floral but otherwise blank screen and nothing else happens. I am able to start in safe mode, which is what I'm in now and I've done a system recovery which worked once, but I don't want to have to do that every single time I start the computer. So what do I try next?

Name my robotics startup

Some coworkers and I are starting a consumer robotics company and we need a name. We prefer a name that isn't "______ robotics", and doesn't have "robotics" in the name at all, because we won't necessarily be building full robots. Instead, we'll be incorporating robotic technology, sensors, and software into everyday objects to make them work better or in new and interesting ways. Eventually well have full-blown robots, but that's a few years off. We'll also be providing robotics consulting services to other companies. [more inside]

What are the best cities to launch a freelance career (cost of living)?

I currently live in NYC - uber-expensive. I'm planning to quit my job very soon (maybe Monday) and go fulltime with my own consulting business. Its technology related and I've had 2 clients thus far and I have evidence I can charge a sizable hourly rate and there's a market for it, but I haven't had time to really market it and the biggest problem is I am not available to make sales calls during the day. I've had inquires from Fortune 100 companies where I come off totally unprofessional unable to even schedule a call during business hours so I think its time to free up my schedule. [more inside]

Friend is likely to start up a partnership (specifically a Limited Liability Partnership) in the UK. Aside from the usual problems of running a business in the current economic climate what particular issues are they likely to face? I'm interested more in the softer 'issues' like the difficulties of coming to decisions between the partners if they all have an equal stake, or how to put in place good procedures for equity partners to join or leave rather than more 'harder' legal aspects of say how to incorporate at Companies House. Can I force OSX to check for external drives after startup???

I purchased a massive external drive to serve as my media HD. I use it for iTunes, Aperture, etc. It works like a charm except that it sometimes powers down during a restart, meaning the drive doesn't always show up after a restart. Even worse, iTunes finds the backup of this drive and uses that instead. Obviously, the solution is to always check to make sure the drive mounted after a restart... but that leaves room for human error. Is there an app that checks to make sure certain drives have mounted? Or is there some other trick I can use to make sure all drives have mounted after a startup? [more inside]
