Please help me get into Stanford.

Tips on getting into Stanford? I know there are plenty of sources on the Internet that give advice on top-tier college admissions, but Stanford's process seems to be notably different, and I really need some guidance. Anyone is welcome to contribute, but I'd especially like to hear from those who have recently gotten in themselves.

To give you a brief idea of what I'm working with: valedictorian at a decent public school, lettered in two sports, several leadership positions, 2370 SAT, 36 ACT, extremely passionate about writing, Native Alaskan/white, gay, overcome severe financial disadvantages. Obviously, my concern is not grades but standing out, which seems to be Stanford's main criterion.

I realize that I shouldn't be so stressed or so focused on Stanford, but, for reasons beyond my control, it's my only real option, so I need to get in. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

Good Stanford-area therapists?

Your recommendations for an inexpensive counselor/therapist in the Palo Alto-Menlo Park area? I live near Stanford (I'm not a student there, though, so I can't take advantage of their services). I have a history of depression, and it's started getting bad again. I'd like to find a therapist or counselor to help me get through this period and over these problems, without paying too much (grad student on extended research trip with a part-time job). Anyone you would recommend?

Feel free to email me privately (f at mavo dot nu). Thanks for your time.

What questions do you have about crowdsourcing?

Stanford/MIT Venture Lab (VLAB) is holding a panel discussion at the Stanford Business School on Crowdsourcing -- when companies use the wisdom of crowds to build business value. We're crowdsourcing questions for the event and want to ask for suggestions on what our moderator, Jeff Howe from Wired (who coined the term crowdsourcing) should ask our panel of participants about the topic. What questions would you want to ask a panel of top VCs, company CEOs and journalists involved in the space? What are you most curious about when it comes to crowdsourcing?

Is Palo Alto really this boring?

What the heck do Stanford students do for fun? Other than homework. I'm a recent graduate from UCSD (lovingly nicknamed UC Socially Dead; this is a glimpse into how low my standards are) and I now live a couple of blocks from Stanford. I'm busy busy since I work full time and am also a grad student, but every once in a while I have a free night...and have no idea what to do.

I pick up the Daily and all the events are public lectures and other academically edifying things, or some vast multitude of sports. What is there to do for someone who wants to unwind with some live music, or watch avant-garde films, or something else that many college students like? If UCSD generally had at least one vaguely listenable band there a week, I can't believe Stanford doesn't. But where are they listed? Do students actually get in their cars/trains and go to the city to get their private-schooly grooves on??

NB: I have heard about Old Pro, Blue Chalk Cafe, and F&A's (I have never been to any of them when there was a band playing; I have judged the DJing unremarkable, but feel free to correct me). I also go to the Stanford Theatre and the Aquarius all the time. But I mean, this is like the nightlife of the San Fernando Valley. There's got to be something to do that I haven't heard about.

I figure there must be enough Stanford students/grads/area-youth-at-heart that I can get a little better grip on the resources available to a young woman looking for a decent night out. Other things in the area that you love are welcome too - good restaurants, chill parks, etc. I'm a few blocks off University and walk everywhere.

Best neighborhoods for general surgery resident at Stanford?

The Residency Match takes us from the East coast to Stanford, and I was wondering if I could get some suggestions with regards to accomodation (1br or equivalent) taking into account rates vs neighborhoods most accessible to the core hospitals (University Hospital, VA Palo Alto, Kaiser Foundation, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center) in terms of traffic conditions. Thanks.

Have you attended the Stanford Graduate School of Business Summer Institute for General Management? How was your experience? If you are an employer in the financial sector, how much more inclined would you be to consider a job applicant with a non-business degree who had attended the SI?

Info on Wired Mention of Stanford Project Geocoding Photos?

Last month in Wired, David Weinberger mentioned a research project at Stanford that "compares photos with shots of known locations, automatically annotating snaps with information about where they were taken."

Anyone know what he's talking about? I can't seem to turn up any more information about the project.

I love meticulous documentation of the environment.

So, I love Chicago mile-by-mile and the Stanford cityblock project. Lately I've been looking for other examples of this sort of meticulous documentation of the environment. Anyone got any leads? Bonus points for examples of projects that are clever enough to do this through distributed photography.

Reality of the Stanford Prison Experiment

Everytime I read about the Stanford Prison Experiment, I become skeptical. I can believe the kinds of things that are described happened, I just can't believe they happened so fast. Is there any evidence things didn't happen as described, that the happenings were exaggerated?
