Do you lift people regularly onstage? If so, what are your best tips for doing so safely? In the opera I'm currently rehearsing, I have a comedy fight scene which involves lifting another singer. So far it's going well-- the liftee is happy, I'm feeling no ill effects, the fight/movement director has given us the OK, and the lift works well in the context of the scene. However, we have four more weeks' rehearsal ahead of us, and I'd like to stay uninjured and safe during that time. Hit me with your tips. [more inside]
its been so long since I had to book spaces for shows in NYC that I have no idea who to even contact for possibly hosting a one man show later this year -- What small venues in NYC should I be talking to about hosting a one man show at somewhat last moment (less than three month notice)? Seating capacity round 60 - think bar with generous back room rather than theatre.
Historically I have not been an incredibly handy person, but I currently find myself in the process of DIY building a few modular stage platforms from 2x4s and 3/4" plywood which will be clamped together to serve as a stage for a blackbox theatre space that I run (used for improv, sketch and stand-up comedy). Does anyone have any construction tips or recommendations to dampen the noise from footsteps? [more inside]

I have an odd job interview coming up. I need advise on a children's book to read to a grown up audience and a two minute poem or "fun" monologue to recite. I think it'd be best if these related to the joy of learning or science. For the book, I might just read part of "Corduroy" because its beautiful and sweet, but what about the other requirement? I'm designing a show this week (Iolanthe) which is far from my first lighting design, but I've never really gotten to experiment much with different gel color combinations. Which are your favorite combos (front, fill, back, side, etc.) for different set-ups. I'm looking for both the classic standards and less common combinations you've come across and enjoyed. I'm going to have a bit of free reign with this, so I'm curious to see what new (to me) things I might want to try. Rosco colors preferred.

I want to turn a short play into a short film. If completed, it'll be a low-budget affair seen at a few festivals and hopefully online; the play was first performed in 1990 and the playwright is still alive.
