I started taking a Ssri (Zoloft) and I need serious reassurance

I've been on 50mg/Zoloft per day for the last 10 days for severe anxiety and some depression. To say it's been a rough ride is an understatement – and I really need to hear success stories and make a decision on how bad the side effects get before it gets better. [more inside]

Teenage Boy, SSRI Change for Weight Gain

Kinetic 3, 15, was diagnosed with OCD and has been on Celexa for 7 years. Over the past few years, despite working with a nutritionist, eating a healthy diet and getting lots of exercise, his weight has ballooned into the technically obese category. He's 5'5" and weighs over 155 lbs. Going to see prescribing psychiatrist next week to consider changing medications, looking for advice. My son is a healthy, active kid. He runs, bikes, hikes, kayaks, swims. He eats colorful foods, a mostly vegetarian diet and very little in the way of bread, pasta, potatoes, junk food, ice cream, soda, etc. He's worked with a nutritionist who feels that his diet and portion sizes are fine and she thinks at this point, he needs to consider a medication change. I'd like to go to the prescribing doctor with some knowledge. [more inside]

SSRIs and the end of romantic love

Four months after my husband went on Lexapro, I could see it in his face that he didn't love me anymore. At seven months, he asked to separate after four years of marriage. After finding this article online, I'm curious as to whether others have had similar experiences. Have you or your spouse experienced a decline in attachment/romantic love after starting an SSRI? Is my SSRI working? Too much or not enough to increase the dose?

I was just prescribed Zoloft for anxiety and possible depression. After I've been taking it for 1, 2, 4 weeks or whatever milestones make sense, how can I determine whether it's actually working., and how do I decide whether a dose increase might help me more? I'm looking for specific challenges - exposure exercises, though experiments, daily logging maybe? - to attempt and compare with previous results to quantify my improvement. [more inside]

The first 10 days with prozac.

I have just been given a script for Prozac/Fluoxetine 20mg. My doctor gave me a good overview of the process of adjusting to having this in my system. But I am now a little bit apprehensive about starting on them as I have a business trip in 10 days time. On the business trip I will be conducting a training program solo, so I can't really afford to be feeling nauseous, headachy, more anxious etc. These seem to be common initial side-effects. So my question is, should I wait until after the trip to start taking the pills, due to the initial side effects? Or are they over-stated in your experience? [more inside]

The scoop on SSRIs minus the depression

Looking for experiences with SSRIs prescribed for occasional intense panic attacks and anxiety (some social anxiety too) WITHOUT any pre-existing depression, suicidal, or bipolar symptoms. Xanax hasn't worked well (lowers anxiety but seems to increase irritability). My friend has seen a therapist, who recommended this after several months of sessions, and is going to talk with a doctor about options. He's concerned with doctors' tendency to overprescribe SSRIs and monkeying around with something that's probably not intended for this.

I've been taking Fluoxetine 20mg for about sixteen months for my anxiety. It's helped a lot in terms of curbing panic attacks and making me less moody, short-tempered and irritable – a huge plus when you're living with someone. My OCD is also much better than pre-Fluox. CBT has also gone a long way in helping me manage the anxiety. [more inside]
