packet loss wreaks more havoc than it ought to on ssh sessions... even when connectivity returns, the session can take take a dozen seconds to return to interactivity. it's often faster to reconnect with a new session than to wait for the established session to recover. frustrating and distracting. has anyone else seen and solved this issue? some kind of retry/timeout/backoff adjustment or something?

I'm looking for a JAVA package/class library that would allow me to connect, send and receive data via the telnet and SSH protocol. I would love for the package/library to handle the connecting, handshaking, authentication, etc. I would like the the protocol to be transparent to me, meaning that the way I send data and receive wouldn't change my code if it was SSH or telnet. Any version of the JAVA is fine. I'm trying to develop a different kind of telnet/ssh client and would rather not rewrite code if there is something already out there. I could even get started with just telnet. Thank you for your time and help. Have a great one.

Much to my surprise, I have been given a visa to visit ol' zhongguo (china) for a few months (i'll be doing research on minorities). I would like to be able to surf the net anonymously but I'm a bit of a nOOb when it comes to proxy servers and what not. I remember seeing a similar question on slashdot but answers said things like "Just ssh into ..." I know what ssh is, etc. but i'm not sure how to use a proxy through ssh. can anyone give me some basic instructions? I would appreciate help. Comments like "Don't go to China if you don't want to obey their rules!!!" or whatever are less appreciated. Thanks!

Where I work has suddenly become all fascist about internet access and blocked SSH access. This is a pain because it was how I used to access my emails (SSH in, use Pine). I can't use a POP3 client on my PC because they've had that port blocked for ages. I'm currently using mail2web but don't like the way it handles replies and the general lack of functionality. My question is: is there a good free webmail application out there that is either managed (like mail2web) or I can install in my account (Linux, no db access, no root). If the latter can cope with the folders I have (I use spamassassin), safely render HTML emails (possible junk mail) and is easy to install, then that would be excellent. I have tried Google and Freshmeat but all the ones I saw were either commercial or looked rather featureless. Any recommendations?
