What made a nest on our balcony?

My husband and I live in an apartment in Seattle, with a third floor balcony. We had a circular clay pot that previously held a rosemary plant on the balcony - the rosemary died before summer of 2013, but we just left it in a corner and never did anything with it. In time, the pot got sort of hidden by other plants. Today we were cleaning the balcony, and realized that something had made a nest in the pot! [more inside]

How to safely evict squirrels from a palm tree about to be trimmed?

We share a 10' tall palm tree with a neighbor. The tree needs to be trimmed (dead fronts, some rotting areas, etc.). At least one, and probably a whole family, of squirrels has made its home somewhere in that tree. I don't want to see them get injured, but I don't know how to get them out before the tree-trimming service people come and start whacking at it. [more inside]

Anything I can do to keep squirrels off fruit trees?

Has anyone successfully deterred squirrels from eating the fruit off the trees in their yard? I see a lot of "squirrel repellent" sprays on the market (but I also see a lot of "eat-what-you-want-still-lose-weight" products out there too; I'm not going to take their word for it.) Also what about ultrasonic repellents, do those work? [more inside]

Save my mom's tomatoes from the squirrels

My mother has a squirrel problem. She has a ton of tomato plants and now that they're coming in, the squirrels are picking them and eating part of them. Is there something she can do to save her plants? Note: killing the squirrels is not an option--she would rather not have tomatoes than kill the squirrels.

Squirrel Nut Tree

I want to plant some trees in the front yard that appeal to squirrels and birds. One would think that nut trees (hazel, chestnut, etc) would be a good choice but there's one thing - I'm hugely allergic to them and their pollen. What sort of tree should I plant? [more inside]

I know this sounds ridiculous.

My aunt-in-law is looking for the name of a science fiction novel (probably published during the early 1970s) with the following description: "A hippy girl who wears overalls travels to a planet where the inhabitants are simian. There is no death on this planet. She also has two squirrels." [more inside]

Rats with tales, and a PR agent.

Why Are Squirrels eating pears and tomatoes?

Why are squirrels eating our pears and our neighbor's tomatoes this year, when previously they ignored them? We have had the pear trees for years and never had this problem before, this year they are all gone already. Also I saw a squirrel try to bury a pear. Hexatron's Wife

Removing unwanted animal residents in our attic

We live (rent) on the second floor and attic of a house. The attic is finished in such a way so that there are crawlspaces on each side of the gable, which we use for storage. Something, presumably a squirrel or other manner of rodentia, has taken up residence either in the recesses of one of these crawlspaces or between the floors and scratches away annoyingly, most often at 5:30am. Is there anything we can do to drive the thing away* or should we just invest in a humane trap?

* We have a cat and two dogs live below, so things that emit animal-annoying frequencies are out of the question.
