I'm writing a small app to store my contacts. There's a little tool to search for names. When I search for "Jo", the results should display all names starting with "jo", followed by those with "jo" in the middle:
How do I do this using a single SQL statement?

I have a MySQL database that contains two fields - name and e-mail - for a bunch of records. Separately I have a FileMaker 7 database that contains the same fields - name and e-mail - and
contains other fields, like "notes".
My question: can the FileMaker database, after polling the MySQL database, show name and e-mail as read-only; and then show the other fields as editable? i.e. if I make a change to the MySQL database, can I get it to show up in FM? [more inside]

I currently have a very low level of SQL knowledge (I can construct simple queries for multiple tables, but I start to fall apart on the difference between inner and outer joins).
I need to learn to create multiple join SQL queries and Dynamic SQL/Stored Procedures on MS SQL Server 2000 in a short period of time. I'd also like to learn to use MS Query Analyzer more efficiently. Is there one book or online resource that is best for this?
Additionally, are there alternatives to using MS Query Analyzer, or is that really *the* tool? [more inside]

On the Mac, if I need to munge text in extremis, I prefer to use BBEdit. Recently, on the PC, I am finding myself in need of a text editor which is similar to BBEdit. I will use it both for coding and for text-cleaning. I prefer freeware and shareware but that's by no means the deciding factor. Which programs should I check out? Which should I avoid? [more inside]

I am trying to implement SQL mail fonctionnality for monitoring purpose under win2k / sql2k, only problem is to be configurer properly it must first obtain its parameter from Microsoft Mail API (MAPI) thru an already configured mail account, these are production servers and i don't feel too good about installing Outlook or Outlook express just to get an account configured so i can use this fonctionnnality. is there a way around this ?
I am aware of several monitoring solution offered by third parties and i accept proposition (please no astroturfin') but I want to get that build in feature to work first.. anyone ?

SQL Filter: is there any way when making a query to create a temporary column that assigns each row in the result set an ordinal number? This is for when you not only want to count the number of items in a result set (ie, there are 50 items), you also want them numbered 1-50 or whatever. [more inside]

Say I have a database
there is a table called
In this table is a field named
. There are aprox 4000 entries.
Each entry holds an absolute path to a directory on the C drive. For example
I want to automatically replace the first character of each entry with the letter F. So that each path points to the F drive.
Can it be done? Can it be done without MS Access? Can it be done by a person with no programing skills, knowledge of databases, or understanding of SQL queries and the like? If so, how? Thank you all. [more inside]
