Too much, yet never enough: residual anxiety over spending

There was a time in my childhood when my family was poor. Our situation improved as I grew up. But I must've somehow picked up this anxiety about things such as food and clothing. It doesn't exactly interfere with my life, but it can be a waste of mental energy and makes things a bit less enjoyable. Do you have any suggestions for me? [more inside]

What medium-sized indulgence could around $1000 buy?

I'm not looking for investment advice or money-savings advice. Pretty much the opposite. I'm looking for ideas of things that I could do with around $1000 - it could be a weekend trip, a premium consumer product, or something that will benefit me for a long time. Make supplemental income

I asked earlier about how to invest my savings (twenty-five thousand). And although a lot of the answers were good, many were not realistic for someone living in Canada, as our tax laws are different. Also, I have decent retirement fund already so I don't want to put anything into that. So for now I'm just keeping it in my 3% savings account until I decide later what to do with it. [more inside]

Help, I need to become more frugal. Immediately.

I am a lot poorer since February, due to my ex leaving me (he was splitting the bills with me, so I am down about $500/month from where I was). I have some savings but I've been blowing through it because I haven't been able to get myself to stay on a monthly budget. Help me be frugal! [more inside]

A first-world problem if there ever was one.

I get a lot of happiness from buying stuff. I want to become one of those people who is happy with what she has and guarded with her cash. Fighting/rectifying a mistake made by FSA admins

Asking for my SO. Short version: Because of incorrect information we received from ADP (our FSA administrators) in February, we're about to lose $1400 in SO's FSA that we had saved for her Lasik. We've contacted a healthcare advocate, and are trying to move up her surgery; in your experience, is there anything else we can do? [more inside]

Please help me stop spending money that I don't have.

I keep buying things that I cannot afford, which forced me to dip into savings over and over again. I have a credit card balance that I cannot pay off this month, which has never happened to me before in my life. I'm feeling helpless, and I am angry at myself for letting this happen. I haven't quite reached paycheck to paycheck status (I am about 1 month ahead), but if I continue like this, my cushion will be gone completely. I don't know what is wrong with me or why I keep doing this - or why it has gotten so much worse. I had always thought that I was pretty good with money while living with my parents; after moving out, either i have gotten much worse or having few expenses masked the problem. I will take any advice or suggestions.

How much time do you spend budgeting and tracking spending?

How much time do you spend each week or month budgeting, tracking spending, thinking about your money, paying bills, etc.? These are tasks that I hate, and I , therefore, do not dedicate enough time to do them. Right now money comes in (paychecks are automatically deposited into my checking and savings accounts) and money goes out (bills are paid automatically by my banks and I spend cash and use my debit card). However, I'm not tracking everything I spend (I know that I should be), and I'm not budgeting for the future. I have a (very) small savings, but basically live paycheck to paycheck. I know that tracking spending and budgeting are the way out of this trap, but I'm loathe to get started (again--I've tried before), because of how much time I anticipate it will take. If you are tracking spending and budgeting on a regular (weekly?) basis, how much time does this activity take in order to have a clear picture of your finances and adequately plan for the future? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Two-Month Allowance

I've a boyfriend visiting me for a couple of months soon, from outside the US. Funds on his end are quite low, as he's still a student, so I'll be supporting both of us while he's here. (I'm happy to do it, I've a steady full-time job and I've really missed him since he was last here, a few months ago.) What I'd like to know is, would it be appropriate for me to also give him some spending cash for whatever small things he'd like to get for himself, during his stay? A prepaid card of sorts? And, how should I approach this without making him feel like he's completely dependent on me, even if that might be the reality? I'd like to be delicate. [more inside]
