Migraine Doc in Chicago

Hello, I am a long time allergy and asthma sufferer in Chicago. Recently this summer, I have been experiencing major headaches as the weather shifts dramatically. I have an ENT who has been working with me closely, but this is going beyond their area of expertise, as my sinuses, Eustachian, and nasal passages are clear. He thinks the problem/swelling is originating from above my sinus passages. (Sorry for TMI.) [more inside]

Is a referral better than a cold call? How do they work?

My insurance doesn't require referrals to specialists. I've never seen a specialist for a specific problem that wasn't initiated and referred by my doctor. If I want/need to see a specialist for something, does it make sense to see my doctor first and ask for a referral, or find a (random) specialist myself? On the other side, when does a doctor not give referrals? [more inside]

How do I get my need-for-the-rest-of-my-lifetime prescription filled?

I had all but a sliver of my thyroid removed in May 2007, when I was 20. I was under my dad's fantastic health insurance then. Since then, my dad has been laid off, and my health insurance through my work will not pay for anything until I've met a $2000 cap. I didn't make an appointment with my specialist for nearly two years, so he refused to fill my prescription for levothyroxine. [more inside]

When Trusted Doctors Leave Town...

Should I find a new doctor, and if so, must I start from scratch? My long-time rheumatologist has moved out of state and I have an appointment this week to see her successor. I have "iffy" feelings about him based on one phone conversation. Long backstory inside. I know YANMD, but I'd appreciate opinions from both medical professionals and consumers. [more inside]
