Is there an objective way to measure audio fidelity? If so, what is it? In other words, what quality of headphones and speakers makes the differences in sound quality?

Is there any way to normalize the volume output on my PC so I'm not startled by clicking on a video link? The volume on YouTube and other sites varies so wildly from video to video that my
modus operandi is to mute before I play the video, then slowly increase the volume, but I'm hoping there is a better way.

Based on their good reviews and cheap price, I bought a pair of
JBL Control 1 Pros for my DJ setup at home without realizing they were passive speakers. Any recommendations for a cheap amplifier? I just need some basic reference monitors for my turntables/mixer so I'm a little out of my depth when it comes to wading though reviews on audiophile websites.

I want to listen to my digital music player at work (technically, WMAs and not MP3s) through speakers rather than headphones. With the latter, all my songs sound fairly consistent in volume. With the former, they're all over the map and ditto for the dynamic range. Suggestions?

I'm looking for a 2.1 speaker system that is similar in shape and size to Logitech's X-230 but sounds considerably better. I actually quite like the sound of the satellites but the subwoofer is just ridiculous. Even when turned down completely it still is way too loud. I guess this system was built with gamers in mind... I'm looking for a system that is meant for listening to music. Right now I'm trying out a pair of affordable nearfield monitors (Behringer MS40) which sound allright (I guess, I'm not entirely sure yet) but are still quite a bit too big for my current workspace. So any recommendations for better-sounding X-230 alternatives are very welcome!

Looking for decent portable speakers for my mp3 player, ideally for $30 or less. This is for my cube at work - low volume, but I'd like at least some bass (current $5 piece of crap speakers do not have put out any bass that I can detect, even when adjusting the primitive equalizer on my mp3 player).

I'm looking for a smallish iPod dock with speakers to put in the kitchen or dining room (anywhere else besides the living room which has the stereo). I'm not interested in a clock, I don't care if it doesn't charge the iPod, just good sound, and a usable decent remote so I could naivigate without having to get up.

Do I really need two or three separate boxes for just-OK computer audio? I need some kind of speaker to hook up to my laptop-used-as-a-desktop, but having three or even two separate components is cumbersome. I also don't think I really need an expensive, fancy system.

Is there a free program that lets me broadcast "white noise" through my computer speakers?
My dogs are vigilant. They bark at noises outside the house, at all hours of the night. We have a "White Noise" machine in our bedroom, and it seems to block the sounds of the outside world quite well, but... our dogs sleep downstairs, and we sleep upstairs, and...we like the white noise machine for ourselves.
I was wondering if there were any sort of software that I could run on my downstairs PC, that would play similar white noise, to distract the pups, since my computer is in the room where they tend to sleep.
We'll probably buy another white noise machine, but in the meantime, can anyone help?
Free software would be preferred! (Or perhaps a website that plays white noise?)
