Twice this week, I've fallen for spam emails. Have I compromised my security? Will I die? [more inside]
My Gmail account was very definitely hacked on Sunday. A whole lot of email was sent, seemingly to everyone I've ever corresponded with from that account. There was clearly a login from Poland which corresponds exactly with when the emails began to be sent. The session seemed to last about 7 minutes. I then received about 150 "mailer daemon" emails due to the bounces from either old addresses, addresses which don't receive unsolicited email and mail servers which correctly identified the content as spam. The powers that be where I work are reluctant to use Twitter because they think anything they tweet will get spammed. Help me convince them they're off the rails on this! [more inside]
I get a TON of bounced email, have I been hacked or is this something else? [more inside]
A few weeks ago I got some phone calls and emails about a quote I submitted online for moving to some small town in central California. The only problem is I never filled out that form. Since they had my yahoo email, I figured they might have hacked my yahoo account somehow and got my phone number from there. I changed my password and removed my phone number from the account but it was too late. Today I got emails and phone calls about auto insurance quotes. The emails I can ignore and once I answer the phone and explain the situation, the agents remove me from their list but I don't know if I want to put up with this every few weeks. Has this ever happened to anyone else? and do I have any other recourse than changing my phone number?

Two months ago, I applied online for a position at a US-based software developer and have not heard back from them beyond an automatic receipt confirmation. The job, along with related vacancies, is still published on their site. Would it be acceptable to contact the company's HR manager via e-mail or LinkedIn to express my continued interest in the position? Snowflake details inside. [more inside]
Twice recently my Gmail acct. has been hijacked by someone who is sending spam emails to some, but not contacts --seems to be only recently emailed (by me) people. The spam is an ad, as seen on Fox News for Raspberry drops weight loss aid. How do the spammers access my Gmail account? Could it be through my brand new Android cell phone? I am unaware of any other problems on my (Macbook) home computer. I have a secure WiFi router at home. No evidence malware or virus. I've changed my Gmail password, FWIW. Any suggestions on how/where to find a way from this happening again?

What's a better-security alternative to Spam Arrest for challenge-response email? I received a password reminder email from Spam Arrest today. It included my full password in cleartext, and when I went to change my password to a long semi-random string of hashed characters I discovered that they silently truncate entries to 20 characters, which would have locked me out if they didn't keep everything in the clear to remind me. Frightening. Is there anyone out there who offer C/R email and knows how to store passwords?
Does obscuring email address and telelphone numbers using hexadecimal notation or other techniques in the source code still inhibit spambots? And does blocking IP addresses that the spambots use have any effect? [more inside]

Does anyone remember a list of logins and passwords, for a myriad of sites, published online for all the world to use? Its advertised purpose was to allow one to use a website without having to register for access... so you didn't have to go through all the steps, nor receive spam in your inbox later... I think it's been several years since I've even thought of this -- also, I feel it had some form of 'gator' or other reptile in its name.

So... FacebookTM sent an email to my email address from someone who I don't know but lives in my general geographical area requesting my friendship. Problem: this email address is definitely not associated with a FacebookTM account. However, there are probably cookies from FB on this computer. Also, this potential "friend" appears to run some sort of digital media consultancy (blech). Question: how did Facebook scrape this email address exactly and why did I get this email? Did this guy pay Facebook to send a friend request to an email address they scraped or is it something more automatic? [more inside]
Is this some type of spam? If so how would it work? [more inside]
Yesterday, someone apparently signed me up for monster.com, beyond.com, and jobfox.com. I know this because I received welcome emails from all three of them to my primary mail address and under my name. As far as I know, my primary mail address has not been compromised. What is going on here?
Gmail + Thunderbird = spamfree email? I use gmail (via google apps) for my small company's email. While it is generally good, the inability to permanently block a sender (e.g. businesses who won't remove me from their spam list) is frustrating, especially when the senders keep appearing in the daily quarantine report. Could this be solved by using Thunderbird as an IMAP client (and “whitelisting” the senders in Postini so they don't appear in the quarantine report)? Is there an easier or more elegant solution? TIA.

I have a web site using Wordpress and a forum plug-in (Simple-Press) that's been around for awhile and has become fairly popular. All of a sudden I've begun getting at least 3 to 6 bogus user registrations each day that are coming from IP addresses in Russia and eastern Europe. I don't really know why or how concerned I should be. They don't need to register to post comments on my blog and Akismet is almost 100% effective at getting rid of comment spam. They're also either not trying to post spam on my forum or they can't get past the Captcha/challenge it uses. [more inside]
Recently spam mail from (what appears to be) the same source keeps getting through my Gmail account. I've never had a problem with this in the past, and the current crop all seems to be roughly formatted in the same way. I've been marking everything I notice as it comes through, but is there anything else I can do? [more inside]
I run a Worpress site, hosted by Dreamhost. We are about to make a memorial announcement.
