My fiancee and I are planning a honeymoon abroad, we're thinking of visiting Spain and/or France. Neither one of us are well spoken in the native languages... do we need to worry? What are people's experiences in this situation (just traveling abroad in general, to a place where you don't speak the language)? Is it a huge burden to bear on yourselves or on the country's native peoples? [more inside]

I'm going to Barcelona this weekend and wanted to get a book for the flight and for when I'm relaxing over there. Does anyone know of any good books that feature the city quite prominently? I'm happy to consider fiction, non-fiction, sporting, historical or political books, anything that you might have enjoyed and that you think might help me engage that little bit more with what Barcelona has to offer.

I'm a US Citizen, and I recently bought a sailboat that is in Spain from another American. I'm preparing to go there and sail the boat around the med for the summer. I would like to purchase some of the equipment that I need here in the states before I go so I can save some $$ and get the right stuff the first time without language barriers. My question is how to get it to Spain without taking a major hit for VAT. I can take some of the items with me in my luggage, but I would like to ship a crate full of heavier things ahead of time. I have a friend who lives in Spain (Spanish citizen) who I could sent it to and have him hold it till I get there. What is the best way to avoid VAT? I'm not looking to cheat the rules here, but I don't want to pay an extra 20% on everything if I don't have to. Also, this is for personal use, and the boat is in my name.

What is the cheapest way for me to get from Estapona (Spain) to Gibraltar or Algeciras? The closest train stop would be in Malaga, which is even farther in the wrong direction. I don't have a European driver's license, so it appears that I won't be able to rent a car. Bus? Taxi? Are those going to be outrageously expensive? My Spanish is quite bad; should I even consider hitchhiking?

My wife and I are going to be in Spain for one week in March. We'd like to take in as much as possible, but not run ourselves ragged (especially since the laid back atmosphere of Spain is one of the draws). What are some things that you must
see and/or do if you're in Spain? [more inside]

We're about to make a trip to southern Spain--we plan to fly into and out of Granada, and drive up to Cordoba in between, stopping in one or two little towns along the way. My questions are:
1. What places/activities/restaurants/etc would you recommend in Granada and Cordoba? (We've already booked our tickets for the Alhambra
2. What little towns should we see along the way?

How hard is it for a mostly wheelchair bound person to get around Spain by train? Our party of 4 includes one wheelchair user (who can make short walks on prosthetic limbs if necessary) and three people with no mobility issues. We're trying to determine if we can travel by train among Madrid, Seville, Toledo, and Cordoba, or if we should rent a car. First-hand accounts would be particularly appreciated, and any other tips on accessibility issues in Spain are welcome as well. [more inside]

CustomsQuestion: I've moved from the UK to Spain, but some of my stuff is still in England. It looks like the easiest/cheapest way to get some of that stuff is to send it to me using a carrier like DHL. One of these items is worth £1,400. Will Spanish customs try and charge IVA (Spanish sales tax on it) as if it was an eBay purchase, or similar, even though I already own it and have paid VAT (UK sales tax) when I bought it. I have documentation.

I need to get a high-resolution (1 MB) photograph of any university restaurant in Spain for an article I'm writing. I had a contact fall through on me at the last minute and need something fast. I've searched some image data banks online and have drawn a blank. Anyway, I'd prefer something original, not stock. Any ideas? I thought about paying a student a bit of money to take a photograph. Problem is, I don't know any university students in Spain.

The Pilgrimage of St James, also known as the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela - involves walking for about 800km across northern spain. I've seen a few faq's online, but what i'd really like is some advice from a fellow mefite who has actually done all or part of this trail.
Also, some general advice on hiking very long distances would be appreciated also.

Any recommendations for hotels in Barcelona Spain?
We're going to be there for a few days at the end of June, and need a recommendation for a hotel that would accommodate a family of four. Most of the hotels we've found only take two people in a room. Any thoughts?
