What does space look like when you're in space?

Once you've flown away from the Earth what's the view like during interplanetary travel? Do planets look as they do on Earth, or are they brighter? What about the stars—or does the sun wash out a lot unless you're in a shadow? Aside from very bright, what does an unshielded sun look like? How far do you need to travel before you loose sight of the Moon? Is any of this like playing Kerble Space Program? [more inside]

What are your favorite novels about contemporary-ish space exploration?

I'm looking for books where characters are exploring the solar system using space ships that are technologically within (or somewhat close to) our capability to build today. Bonus points if those novels are character driven.

Books about the hisotry of NASA, please.

Please recommend a good book about the history of the space travel. I'm particulary interested in NASA, but if it includes info about other countries, all the better.
