Tell me about ordinary life in apartheid South Africa

I'm looking for books (or films, documentaries, blogs) that give an insight into ordinary day-to-day life in apartheid South Africa, particularly during the 1980s. Obviously much has been written about the great political ructions, but I'm interested in what ordinary daily life was like, for black and white. I've recently read 'Boyhood' by JM Coetzee, which is exactly the kind of thing I'm after; and although it's about Rhodesia rather than South Africa, 'Mukiwa' by Peter Goodwin was also very helpful.

Santa vs. the ANC? Huh?

Am I missing a non-racist current political or cultural South African nuance in this internet thingy? An acquaintance "shared" an, uh, thing, on Facebook and I'm not sure I understand the nuance, if any (i.e. is this just a "haha Black people aren't taken seriously" or is this a legitimate political commentary on the ANC, e.g. corruption or whatever else I'm ignorant of?). South African Vocal-Styled Cover of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer?

Yes, it exists, and apparently I even included it on a tape of novelty Christmas music I made years ago for a friend, who wants to know who it was and where I found it. If only I could remember! It sounded a great deal like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, although I am reasonably certain it was NOT them. It was done in a somewhat to-these-untutored ears isicathamiya styling. Can anyone provide a clue?

Looking for South African novel

South African novel? A Boer seduces a black girl, they have sex in his Mercedes Benz. The book deals with the seduction that comes before, and the problems afterwards. The white guy is NOT cast as a villain. My friend read this book in the 70s and is looking for it. Thanks!

Teach me how to teach mythology!

I've been given a mythology class to teach, mostly to juniors and seniors (at a public high school in California). Yay! However, the previous teacher won't let me borrow her material, and my mythological education was taking one class in college and a lot self-teaching (thus, there are gaping holes in my knowledge). And so, mefites, hope me figure out the best way to teach this class! [more inside]

Help me track down this absurd South African poster

During a visit to my mother's fiancée's family in South Africa nearly 14 years ago, we picked up an interesting poster. If memory serves, it was large (perhaps 5x4) and showed a slow-shutter-speed closeup of a dove flying towards the viewer. Above the dove was written "The South African Police:" and below the dove it read "We're here for you". We thought this was hilarious, as all three of us are black and at the time, the South African police force was not known to be exactly warm and friendly. The poster has since been lost during our numerous moves, and my mother never married the gentleman. But I'd like to find the poster. Does anyone remember this or know where I can look to get it?
