Resources for a lesson about the South African Apartheid?

I need help planning a 50 minute presentation for a Holocaust remembrance day relating to the apartheid in South Africa. It will be focused on the music of South Africa, after giving some background information. Did I mention that it is for a bunch of 7th/8th graders and is happening on Wednesday? [more inside]

Life in Jackson after Eudora & Katrina

I've been considering a position in Jackson, Mississippi. The job would be fantastic and a real step-up. The folks there seem eager to have me. The problem is Mississippi. My parents and sister now live there, but pretty far south (Picayune). I live in PA and before this mostly in the Midwest. Will I fit in? [more inside]

Moving to South Bend, Indiana

I am looking for a good area of South Bend, Indiana to live. I am moving for a new job (which I got thanks to mefi help!!) and am looking for apartments. I do not know the area whatsoever. I have around $700 a month to spend and need it to house two people. Any thoughts on locations and what areas to avoid? I know I can browse online but do not even know what are the better (safer) areas...

Is this racist?

An upper class white Southern lady says of an athlete while watching sports on TV: "Look at him, he's dark. He's like charcoal." Is that a racist comment or am I oversensitive? There were no black people in the room when the comment was made. It made me uncomfortable but I didn't say anything.

I can't believe I'm going to blow a question this, but here goes: I keep hearing this really lame hip pop track that features the artist calling out: Whooooooooooooooooo? Yoooooooooooooooooou! and then some references to superman. It's stuck in my head. I can't seem to google it. I've listened to everything on the charts. Help me go to sleep.

South Beach eating and drinking?

Anybody have good recomendations on eating and nightlife in South Beach? Primarily interested in ceviche, cuban food, seafood, lighter fare, not really interested in Italian or big heavy meals. We have a reservation at Talula, thinking about Ola and would like to know about some of the newer places. Price does not matter. Nightlife we like loungey chill places, maybe a club one night if its worth it, not interested in sports bars, etc. Any other tips appreciated. We will be in town from a Thursday to Sunday.

ingmar bergman, who?

In the "Casa Bonita" episode of South Park, Jimmy tells the setup of a knock-knock joke: -Knock-knock! -Who's there? -Ingmar Bergman! -Ingmar Bergman, who? Before he can tell us the punchline, he is literally punched-out by Cartman. So my question is, does anyone know of an existing punchline to this joke? My hunch is that the South Park guys just made this one up. And if that's the case, can anyone think of a great punchline for this setup?

Accessible minty appetizers

Every year at Christmas, my husband's family has a cooking contest. I don't expect to win, because Grandma is generally a lock. Is the Southern United States a 'bad area' for a mixed-race couple to travel?

My girlfriend (white, both parents English) and I (dark-skinned, both parents from Sri Lanka) met an American couple in a bar (here in Australia). They seemed very adventurous, educated and intelligent but became very VERY serious when we said we planned to travel in the Southern States of the U.S., suggesting that - after dark at least - the whole area is still (and I quote) "maybe a bad idea for a mixed-race couple." Are they right?
